✦ How Tuncurry Men’s Shed has transformed the lives of men. Words and photos by Mattea McKinnon A place to socialise, learn a new practical skill, give back to others and be part of a welcoming community. To feel safe voicing something that’s worrying you. To share jokes during morning coffees. It may sound simple, but for many Australian males, this is something deeply lacking in their lives. The global organisation Men’s Shed, provides a space to fill this void and more. Whether it’s making furniture, restoring old bicycles, making wooden bowls or fixing lawn mowers – it has become a powerful tool in many communities. Since its origins in 1978 in NSW, 1200 have now popped up around Australia, with a total of 2500 operating globally in 12 countries. Long term member Shaun, a former TAFE teacher, is the club’s Treasurer. He said; ‘I came here with depression. Now, to have a purpose and reason to get out of bed every day is rewarding for me and also for the other members.’ He continues; “Some men come here for their mental health, some people come here because they are lonely, some just want some purpose in life. The motto here is shoulder-to-shoulder. Women can often find it easier to talk face-to-face and men will talk shoulder-to-shoulder. I’ve had men burst into tears sometimes, they are just so lonely.’ ‘When morning tea happens there is a lot of talk about issues. It just takes someone who’s not frightened to talk about it. You get stories with someone who’s developed some ailment and their symptoms and we’ll encourage them to get checked out.’ 90-year old Bill is one of the founding members of Men’s Shed in Tuncurry and has been for over three decades. A former architect, Bill’s speciality is creating magnificent wooden dolls house, making children’s dreams come true. He describes Men’s Shed as his ‘saviour’ and that he can ‘come here, forget his worries and just concentrate on what I’m doing.’ He said; ‘It has been a blessing. During the financial crisis, my wife and I lost everything – we went from a lucrative financial position to a state pension and lost everything. I got arthritis, became diabetic and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks because of the stress. Once I got through it, things settled down. In the local paper, I saw they were setting up a Men’s Shed and I decided to give it a go.’ Bill’s sadly lost his wife this year after a long battle with dementia. Creating works of art and training up apprentices at Men’s Shed is now pivotal part of his weekly routine and aids his wellbeing. He says; ‘Bob has been teaching me, he’s really patient. Before this I was in part’s management for heavy earth moving equipment - nothing to do with woodwork at all. I love the companionship, the motivation to do something good for myself and others.’ Member George has background in carpentry and joinery and has been coming to Men’s Shed for over a decade. He says; ‘my passion has always been with wood and creating things. I’ve done so many projects in here – a BBQ table, jewellery boxes, all sorts. I select the wood and it’s all recycled timbres. My favourite thing about this place, aside from the people, is teaching others. I’m 83 in a few weeks and have 70-year-old apprentices. Nothing pleases me more than showing someone how to start something.  I really like helping out.” Treasurer Shaun has a deep understanding of the meaning behind Men’s Shed and the power of purpose, friendship and kindness. ‘I know I have more birthdays behind me than in front of me. When you turn 60 or 65, you’ve got no value if you’re sat watching TV. You are still the same person but you’ve got no value. A lot of these people don’t understand what the Men’s Shed about, they just think it’s a fun place to be. I keep telling them, it’s not about the woodwork, it’s about the community. When you see of kids playing with the toys we’ve made – it makes you feel great.’ ‘Society is now at a stage, that if you’re not wealthy and you don’t work hard, then you’re not good person. We’re driven to consume and get wealthy - that’s where we are getting our worth from. When you do that, you build a cage for yourself, because it can lead to distrusting people around you. The more you chase money and possessions and what governments what you to do, the small this cage can get smaller, and when you finish working, no one wants to know you. We’ve evolved to be like this but we can’t live by ourselves, we die inside.’ He finishes with a wise statement; ‘if you see someone who looks a bit lost, be kind – pass it on’. ✦ World Cancer Day 2024 theme is "Close the Care Gap" and calls for the creation of innovative strategies to address inequities and the allocation of resources towards a just and cancer-free world. World Cancer Day on February 4th is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to unite people in the fight against cancer by raising awareness, promoting education, and inspiring action. Imagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are avoided, and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equitable for all, regardless of their background or location. King Charles raising awareness King Charles of England has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and he has chosen to go public about the news because he had been a patron of several cancer-related charities when he was Prince of Wales. It has been the case when he went for his prostrate treatment, and being honest about it with the aim to encourage more men to get checks. The NHS website reported a surge in issues about prostrate conditions since then. "In this capacity, His Majesty has often spoken publicly in support of cancer patients, their loved ones and the wonderful health professionals who help care for them." (Source: bbc.com) Close the Care Gap Many individuals still face obstacles when seeking cancer care. Factors such as income, education, geographical location, and discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, and lifestyle can hinder access to quality care. That is why this year's World Cancer Day theme is "Close the Care Gap". There is a demand for commitment from world leaders to prioritise cancer care and ensure that everyone has access to quality health services. It is important we create a strong network of care and support right where we are in our communities. We all have a role to play and can make a difference in a cancer patient's treatment journey. Australian Cancer Plan The Australian Government has unveiled the Australian Cancer Plan, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing various aspects of cancer care nationwide. The plan encompasses prevention, screening, treatment, and management for all cancer types, with a focus on inclusivity and accessibility. Professor Dorothy Keefe, CEO of Cancer Australia, introduced the plan at the 50th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) in Melbourne. The Plan will support the National Agreement on Closing the Gap to enable Aboriginal and Torres Islander people and governments to work together to overcome the inequality experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and achieve life outcomes equal to all Australians. The plan addresses the entire spectrum of the cancer journey, spanning from prevention and early detection to treatment, recovery, and end-of-life care. How to offer support Here are some Do's and Don'ts that may guide you if you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Emotional support from family and friends makes a big difference to the quality of life of cancer patients. It's okay to... Be honest and say you feel awkward. Acknowledging the reality of what's happening can be more relieving than pretending. Ask if they want a hug. Show them you are thinking of them with a call, a card, a text, a note etc. Offer to listen if they wish to talk, and make the effort to be available for them. Be consistent and supportive through the process from diagnosis through to treatment and after. Respect their choices if they need privacy. Try not to... Say you know how they feel. We cannot ever assume we can understand. Compare their situation to someone you know. Each person's experience with their illness is highly individual. Enforce toxic positivity and pressure them to be strong. It makes them feel like they have to behave a certain way and their genuine feelings will not be validated. Take what they say or do personally. They may not want you to be there or they may reject a hug, and it's okay. How to listen to someone with cancer Practical ways to support Patients do appreciate when friends or family can offer to do very specific things and take the initiative to ask. You can offer to drive them to the hospital for their medical appointments. If you wish to visit, ask first. They may not be feeling up to it and it's not because of you. Bringing a meal over for them or preparing meals they can freeze for the week can help relieve a burden. Help with errands such as gardening, grocery shopping, walking the dog etc. Ask if they would like any help with household chores. Help with dropping off the children at school or picking them up after. It is okay to have an honest conversation with cancer patients to know what they most need help with. If you are able to offer the help, make sure you commit to it and are prepared for any changes. Being diagnosed with cancer is a challenging situation for everyone, so patience, kindness and understanding are key. It is also important that carers and those offering support look after their own mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Be realistic about what you can and cannot help with or do. It may be a long journey to equity in providing medical care but we can all start where we are. ✦ Singapore will be holding its first islandwide Total Defence exercise in February to enhance the preparedness of its citizens for crises and disruptions. Are we ready for disruption? That is the question. Even as we trundle through the 21st century with amazing technology and globalisation, we are not immune to disruptions. Take a look at this video for possible scenarios should disruptions occur. *Trigger warning: some scenes may be uncomfortable or worrying for some viewers. Be prepared While nobody has the perfect solution or guarantee, being prepared is a step towards empowering citizens to be aware and know how to respond should disruptions occur. Singapore's Exercise SG Ready will take place from February 15 to February 29, 2024, at various locations across Singapore. The purpose of this exercise is to enhance the preparedness of Singaporeans for crises and disruptions, and to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Total Defence (TD40). The exercise will simulate disruptions in power, water, food supply, digital connectivity, and civil emergencies caused by cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and drone attacks from an anonymous source. The goal is to prompt individuals, communities, and businesses to consider their readiness for disruptions and to develop their own contingency plans. More than 500 educational, community, commercial, and government buildings will be participating in the event. On February 15 or 16, all schools will simulate disruptions in power, water, or food supply. Emergency food supplies will be provided to some schools during this period. During the two-week exercise, community facilities, commercial buildings, and government buildings will take turns to simulate disruptions. These disruptions will include temporary stoppage of escalators and air-conditioners on different days. Additionally, 20 prominent public buildings like the Treasury, Supreme Court, National Heritage Board museums, Esplanade Theatres, and Suntec Convention Centre will switch off their facade lighting to simulate a blackout caused by a cyber attack on the power grid. Importance of education The decision to conduct this exercise was made based on feedback from government agencies and partners, highlighting the importance of educating Singaporeans on how to respond during a crisis. Brigadier-General Kelvin Fan, the deputy secretary (policy) at the Ministry of Defence and chairman of the TD40 organising committee, shared this information during the launch of the Total Defence 40th anniversary events on January 22. “It is to enhance the readiness, resilience and the unity of Singaporeans whenever there is a crisis”, amid “increased volatility, increased uncertainty and increased turbulence in the world.” - Brigadier-General Kelvin Fan What to expect during the simulation Click here for more information on the Total Defence exercise. Providing support In line with Exercise SG Ready, it is crucial to remember those who may require more support during this period. Organisations such as ComChest will be launching a campaign to support Total Defence, while the Singapore Red Cross Society and Singapore Emergency Responder Academy will be offering Psychological First Aid courses during Exercise SG Ready. Citizens are encouraged to enroll in these courses to. provide support to others and strengthen Singapore's collective resilience. While it is debatable if such an exercise can realistically be carried out in all countries, it can bring some peace of mind knowing that we have the know-how and organisational structures in place so we can respond efficiently and appropriately to situations as they come. This expanding qi fuels a fresh life cycle and signals a time for us to broaden our horizons. I am honored and humbled to carry on Lillian Pearl Bridges’ tradition of writing the Chinese astrology forecast. Her memory lives on and her teachings of yin/yang, the five-elements, and the energetics of the 12 Chinese animals are contained in this prediction. I will do my best to honor her legacy. The dragon (chen) is the fifth earthly branch, and it calls us to first embody our innately powerful qi, and then use spiritual brightness to release those aspects of life that no longer serve us. Letting go of this xie (negative) qi allows our hearts to swell with enjoyment and love. The dragon gifts us with a makeover that shifts our being ‘like a revolutionary power about to change the entire world.’ (Wu and Wu 2014, p.122) This is a time to cleanse your body, mind, and spirit before a metamorphosis, and ultimately tap into your internal power and activate your consciousness. The year of the dragon symbolizes the time of growing from a teen to a young adult. As we awaken to this new stage of life, like the mystical dragon, we transform. The dragon emerges on February 4th and celebrations begin on February 10th. Each year, Chinese cosmology consists of three aspects: one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, one of the five-elements, and either yin or yang. These three aspects provide information about the energetics of the year and contribute to guiding a person in making life-affirming choices. This year is represented by wood setting on top of earth. To better understand the qi of the year, I will first break down the symbolism and qualities of the three aspects and then discuss how they influence various facets of life. Dragon Dragon represents the month of April, the third month of spring, a very enchanting time in nature with all the transformations happening. It depicts the time between spring and summer in which the dragon serves as a bridge between seasons by supplying support and nourishment. The dragon also symbolizes the time 7 am to 9 am (breakfast) when we nourish our body to prepare for the day. This is a metaphor for providing the new chapter of life with sustenance. The hexagram associated with Dragon is Guai, which can be interpreted as a body of water that is overflowing, requiring prompt drainage to avert flooding, thus symbolizing the need to be mindful of your actions and decisions to contain your power. Energy is reaching a tipping point and getting ready to break out. Tune into the force and spirit of the present moment. The dragon represents making good choices for your future during a crucial time or situation, making 2024 a great time to make an important decision! In western culture, dragons are often thought of as fire-breathing menaces that attack humans. However, they are considered auspicious in Chinese shamanism. They symbolize connection, transformation, freedom, and the universal way. Dragons are said to live in rock but can be observed in cloud formations: in the sky (sky dragons), over the water (water dragons), and hovering over the mountains (earth dragons), making them dynamic figures regarding the five-elements. Each earthly branch (12 animals of the zodiac) is associated with one of the five-elements. The dragon is primarily associated with the yang earth element. However, since it is in the eastern triad of animals (tiger, rabbit, and dragon), it also has wood nature. Also, it has a reservoir of water, making the dragon multifaceted. However, this year has less water energy than the last several years and thus fears are assuaged. The earth aspect of the dragon accentuates its connection with the digestive system which can be affected by emotionality, especially anger/frustration. These emotions relate to wood and since this is a wood dragon year there can be more irritation and aggression. Wood Wood relates to the color green; hence this year is the Green Dragon. The wood element represents action, accomplishment, physical activity, thunder, change, and passion. In addition to the emotions of anger and irritation, the wood emotions also can manifest as timidity and a feeling of powerlessness. If someone fails to activate their wood element of assertion and achievement, then the wood element implodes internally, rendering a person ambivalent and depressed. The Green Dragon implores us to continue the action-oriented behavior of the previous two years. This includes weighing all the possibilities and making informed, mindful decisions to avoid getting caught in a funk which can lead to arguments, self-sabotage, and in some extreme cases, self-harm. The organs associated with the wood element are the liver and gallbladder. Therefore, in addition to emotional imbalance occurring due to not following the intention of action, problems relating to the liver and gallbladder can develop. (See more about this in the “Health” section below). Fortunately, since this year is yang; it provides a significant impetus to seize the day and act. Yang Yang is symbolized by action, daytime, sun, male, moving forward, etc. This accentuates dragon’s wood nature (wood element is predominately yang) and sets the stage for a more active Dragon year. This year is very yang. The yang is associated with the father figure which plays the role of encouragement and instilling a belief in oneself to go out into the world confidently. Thus, the dragon (a yang animal) which is already driven to soar, has even more momentum to go forth and shine. It is about moving forward and transitioning from teen to adult. Like a teenager, dragons can be emotional, critical, and unhappy. They possess active imaginations which help them to navigate life. However, they change their mind often, so this year might be riddled with sea changes. The dragon represents the month of April which is the time of the Qingming festival in China. The festival celebrates the need to clear out old energy and to keep in mind where you came from by spending time in nature and at your ancestors’ graves to view your future with clarity. Observing these traditions grounds you and assists you in manifesting your path. Dragons tend to give up on things quickly when encountering resistance in their work. Thus, it is important to listen to others and consider all the options before moving forward. You might find yourself feeling unstable when working with others. This can be mitigated by engaging in grounding exercises such as forest bathing, imagining a cable extending from your spine down deeply into the earth, meditations on Mother Earth, etc. Remembering that the dragon lives in rock, it can pierce rock and other dense materials easily, meaning that it has powerful energy to change matter. Therefore, strong weather possibilities exist. Weather April showers bring May flowers. The weather pattern associated with dragon is Tai Yang (cold water), so prepare for lots of rain and snow this year. Flooding and erosion of soil-felling trees is likely. The wood nature of the year relates to sudden changes, meaning surprises and quick shifts in weather especially related to global warming. Last year was the hottest year on record having had some of the strongest storm events in history: Storm Daniel, Tropical Cyclone Freddy, and the wildfires in Canada to name a few. The wood element also relates to thunder and shaking, so like last year we can expect more earthquakes. However, last year wood was under water (earthquakes in the ocean), but this year wood is over earth which relates to earthquakes on land. Due to the swiftly changing and unforeseen aspects of the weather, bolster your defensive qi by protecting your neck from cold and wind, eating some sour foods, and engaging in regular movement/exercise. Health Dragons are said to require at least 30 minutes of exercise several times per week to boost their metabolism. This is recommended for all of us this year. Each Chinese animal is associated with an earthly branch which represents an organ, an acupuncture channel, and a weather pattern. Dragon is associated with the stomach organ, the stomach channel, and the tai yang (cold water) weather pattern. Stomach organ The stomach receives and ferments food to be sent to the spleen for processing and distribution. Strong emotions, especially irritation and anger, overact on the stomach and deplete its energy which can result in acid reflux, low appetite, stomach aches, gastroparesis (slow digestion), etc. Take care to manage your emotions and follow healthy eating practices such as observing regular mealtimes, chewing food 40 times per bite, not eating late in the evening, eating warm cooked foods, drinking room temperature water, and avoiding digital screens when eating. Stomach channel In addition to the stomach organ function, the channel is also affected this year. The stomach channel traverses the face and there is a higher likelihood of facial pain/paralysis this year. The wood element brings wind, and the cold water of the year brings cold. Therefore, wind cold can invade the body, especially the stomach channel. This could cause Bell’s Palsy, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and other conditions that affect the face. The stomach channel also travels along the lateral part of the hip, leg, and knee. Wind cold could also disturb this part of the body, causing pain and weakness. Be mindful of stretching and keeping your limbs warm. The stomach belongs to the earth element. Fire generates earth and earth generates metal in the five-element generation cycle. Stoking the fire benefits the stomach. This means having fun and enjoying the moment; refrain from stoking the fire too much with spicy foods and alcohol. The metal element is the child of earth so to strengthen the mother, work with the lungs and large intestine (the organs associated with metal). This assists the stomach such as the descending function preventing reflux. Supporting the metal organs improves the stomach’s efficiency, including the qi flow along the channel. The metal element oversees releasing these old ways and by discarding them, your ability to receive the powerful qi of the year increases. Tai Yang The weather pattern of the year is major yang cold water. Expect heavy snow, freezing rain, and flooding, especially in late spring, autumn, and winter (the northern locales will likely experience snowmageddon). This coupled with the wood energy of the year (wind) will create lots of wind cold which can cause arthritis and general musculoskeletal pains. Protect your joints from the wind cold and use heat to warm the tissues. Getting moderate exercise to move your qi will also prevent pain. Also enhance your stability by imagining being a tree standing firmly, rooted in healthy soil. World Cheerleading Championships Since 2009, the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Florida has been the host venue for the World Cheerleading Championships. This highly esteemed event is considered the pinnacle of competitive cheerleading worldwide. With participation from up to 117 countries across various divisions, teams from around the globe compete fiercely for the coveted gold medal and the esteemed title of World Champions. This is the first time Australia will be sending its National Allstar Cheerleading team to compete in the Youth and Junior Cheerleading Worlds division. This is a testament to the remarkable talent and growth of the sport in the country. The decision to send a national team is also influenced by the unprecedented success of the Australian Opens teams at the Cheerleading Worlds in 2023. The Australian Opens teams won a gold medal in the All Girl division and a silver medal in the Coed division. Doing Australia Proud! After a rigorous national selection process, which included submitting skills videos and participating in live auditions alongside athletes from New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia, thirty remarkable individuals have earned their spot on the national team. These dedicated athletes are now training under the guidance of their national coaches, preparing themselves for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their skills on the world stage. The International Cheerleading Union governs the sport in 119 countries, all of which have the right to enter a team into the Allstar Worlds competition. The international competition is expected to be fierce. However, the Australian team is comprised of tough and dedicated children who are determined to bring home a medal. Each member of the team has their eyes set on the prize and is eager to represent their country on the global stage. Billy Elliot of the cheerleading world Loghan Sculthorpe went through a challenging try-out process to secure his spot on the Youth Median (CoEd) team. His journey into cheerleading was unexpected. Initially, he accompanied his twin sister, Serenity, to her cheer competitions in 2019. However, the energy, intense competition, and the camaraderie among the cheerleaders captivated Loghan, and he instantly fell in love with the sport. In 2020, Loghan decided to try out for cheerleading himself, and since then, he has been wholeheartedly committed to his sport. Over the past four years, he has transformed from a kid who struggled with cartwheels to a confident athlete. He takes pride in his hard work, dedication, and his ability to make friends easily. Since 2022, Loghan has been a proud member of the Gymaroo Allstars cheerleading program at PCYC Taree, where he also participates in the advanced power tumbling class. Additionally, he has been involved in the Acro and Theatrical performance troupes at Coastal Dance Performing Arts in Port Macquarie. Loghan's amazing achievements over the years - truly the Billy Elliot of the cheerleading world, Loghan is raising the bar in cheerleading with his dedication to the sport. ✦ The Turmeric Lady brings us this gorgeous golden salad with succulent prawns that is good for your health! Ingredients: (Serves 4) 12 large tiger prawns, shelled 2 tomatoes, diced 1 small red onion chopped 1 cucumber, seeds removed & diced ½ bunch Vietnamese mint 150g Danish feta 2 tsp Health2all Turmeric Dressing: 2½ tbsp warm water Lime juice 1 tbsp honey. 1½ tsp tamarind paste. Salt ½ cup olive oil 1 tbsp Health2all Turmeric Method: For the dressing: In a small bowl place, the tamarind, honey, lime juice, salt & Turmeric4you, mix to form a paste. Stirring slowly add the water little by little until combined. Transfer to a jar with a tight-fitting lid and add the oil. Replace the lid and shake vigorously until emulsified. For the salad: In a medium sized bowl add the tomatoes, red onion and cucumber, season with salt and cracked black pepper. Dress with the dressing, toss, and transfer to serving platter. Meanwhile heat a pan or griddle to medium heat Sprinkle the prawns with Turmeric4you and salt.
