✦ Championing the best of those in their respective fields All Super Heroes in their respective fields Who are the Super Heroes in our communities? There Are Many! Some are visibly present such as front-line workers and those in the medical fields and teachers. But there are also those not so seen or acknowledged at times, such as disability support workers, carers, care givers, grandparents, single parents and parents in general juggling the demands of everyday living as they support and nurture their families. Recently I facilitated a Mindfulness Meditation session for two groups of Carers to help them learn tools and simple practices for managing the challenges in their often, demanding roles. Some of the carers were young, some were older, many were caring for another on their own. All of these carers are Super Heroes of their own stories. And another group session I facilitated was for the Super Heroes in schools - the teachers. I have a Super Hero neighbour, a friendly, thoughtful elderly man who, no matter the weather, greets the day with a friendly face and is always politely thoughtful of others and genuinely checks in with those in his neighbourhood, to see if they are okay. Often, I have Super Heroes walk through my door seeking counselling, life coaching, guidance for managing stress, anxiety and loss. Some are in need of sound healing and meditation tools. Many are going through challenges and life changes, often while they continue to work or are engaged in volunteer services, whilst caring for others and holding families together. What is a Super Hero? A Super Hero is someone that is of service to others, and puts in effort and commitment to make a positive difference in the life of another. But to be the best Super Hero for others, it starts with yourself. It starts with putting that effort and commitment into you, so that you can be a better Super Hero for others. ✦ Let’s face it, all animals are superheroes at heart in their own unique way. As pets, they are beloved members of the family, bringing unbounded joy and an unconditional love that can often be hard to truly quantify, while wild animals continue to attract our allure and admiration in many different ways. However, there have been countless stories over the years of pets and animals actually stepping up to the breach to perform as true superheroes when called upon. While the list is exhaustive, here we take a look at a few of them. Starting off we don’t have to venture far as our first superhero pet belongs to none other than Brilliant Online’s own Edgard Lopez whose border collie Sherman has stepped up on more than one occasion to perform the role of superhero dog! “We live on a farm in the Mid North Coast of NSW, off-the-grid, surrounded by rainforest, trees, mountains and lots of wildlife,” Ed tells us. “On the farm we have an abundance of animals although our farm dog Sherman is without doubt the smartest border collie you will ever meet! “Annabelle is our youngest of four daughters and loves being around nature and the animals. She and Sherman are close and he always has her back,” Ed explains. Sherman, Ed's Border Collie who saved Annabelle twice “One day Annabelle was feeding the chickens inside one of the many coops on the farm when suddenly a rooster attcked her from behind, pecking at her back and leaving her screaming in pain. Sherman heard her cries of anguish and came running to the rescue, managing to get under the fencing to confront the aggressive assailant before pushing him away from the stricken young girl. “While Annabelle had endured some rather nasty cuts on her back from the attack, it wold have been far, far worse had Sherman not jumped in to rescue her,” Ed recalls. “The second instance of Sherman coming to her rescue was when Annabelle was walking in the rainforest only to come across a red-bellied black snake on the path. Frozen by a combination of fear and an awareness to remain absolutely still, young Annabelle did not move a muscle, although she was, in effect, trapped. Cue Sherman’s entrance, who confronted the reptile by barking in order to distract it. Despite the snake becoming quite aggressive in the face of Sherman, the faithful farm dog did not step down and successfully managed to shoo the reptile into the bush, never to be seen again.” Two incredible acts of bravery from beloved Sherman, illustrating that having a faithful farm dog is always important, no matter the size of the property, as they will always be on protective guard as true superheroes! Dog’s best friend! Our next superhero pet emerged from the devastation of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that hit Sendai and the eastern Japanese seaboard in March, 2011. Amid the chaos, a two-year-old dog called Ban was swept away, believed to be lost forever. However, three weeks later a coast guard spotted the canine on the roof of a house adrift in an island of debris nearly 2-kilometres from the shore. Recognising Ban on TV news footage, her owner reached out and the two were soon reunited, with the anonymous owner declaring “we’ll never let go of her [again].” You can watch footage of Ban being rescued then reunited with her owner here . Photo Source : www.huffpost.com Another heart-warming story emerged from the same disaster in Japan, proving that dogs are not just man’s best friend but can be other dog’s best friends too! Days after the devastation struck, a news crew came across a mud-caked spaniel who was protecting an injured mate, who they initially thought was dead but realised was actually still alive. The dog appeared to have remained by the side of his injured friend to protect him for days, never leaving his side and even offering touching moments of comfort by stroking his stricken friend with his paw. The loyal mate managed to attract the attention of the TV crew who then called in a rescue team. Thankfully both dogs were taken into animal care and survived. You can watch the video clip here although make sure you have tissues to hand! Going back much further in time we have the courageous story of another superhero dog known as Togo. In 1925 the isolated Alaskan village of Nome was hit by a ravaging case of diphtheria and medicine was unable to be shipped by plane or boat. The decision was made for dog-led sleds to make the perilious journey across the frozen terrain. While the whole team played their part, Togo covered the hardest sections, including a 200-mile trek and a traverse across the hazardous Norton Sound, where the brave canine saved his team and driver in a courageous swim through ice floes. A true superhero, if ever there was one, who had a statue erected in New York in 2001 and a Disney+ film made in his honour in 2019. Read Togo’s full story here . Billy was smuggled into France as a mascot by Canadian troops but soon proved his worth as one day he headbutted three of his comrades into a trench to avoid an exploding enemy shell, saving all of them in the process. Billy endured his fair share of injuries during the conflict, including shrapnel wounds, trench foot and shell shock and was even arrested for eating military equipment but there is no doubt he served with distinction and deserves his title of a superhero! Photo Source : cefrg.ca They say parents will do just about anything to protect their children and that certainly applies to our next superhero animal, Scarlett the cat. Living as a stray on the streets of Brookylyn in New York City, Scarlett had taken refuge with her four-week old kittens in an abandoned garage which, unfortunately, caught fire one day. Firefighters arriving at the scene were aghast to see the badly burned feline who had rescued her young, carrying them one-by-one from the burning wreckage and leaving none behind, despite the serious wounds she endured. The story soon made the news and over 1,000 subsequent offers to adopt brave Scarlett came in. One came to fruition and Scarlett spent the remainder of her days being pampered in a loving environment, as did her rescued kittens by all accounts. Scarlett was such a superhero that several books have been written charting her brave plight and astonishing act of love, loyalty and protection. Read her inspiring full story here . Our final example is another superhero who was lauded for saving the lives of fellow animals. Moko the bottlenose dolphin had become a regular fixture on the beaches along the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island in the summer of 2008, playing with swimmers on a daily basis. One day, however, play turned to helping her fellow mammals when she saved two beached pygmy sperm whales, successfully communicating with and aiding them where humans could not. “I don’t speak whale and I don’t speak dolphin,” Conservation Officer Malcolm Smith told the BBC in 2008, “but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea.” Read Moko’s story here . ✦ The day the Rhythmboat became a rescue boat for Joel Amidst the lively entertainment that Port AdVenture Cruises offered, the day took an electrifying turn. David, the seasoned cruise director of the magnificent Rhthymboat, was guiding his crew and passengers through the picturesque Lady Nelson Wharf. The sun was blazing, the sea shimmered, and laughter filled the air. Then, an unexpected sight jolted everyone from their carefree revelry. A young boy, stranded on a sandbar as the tide had ebbed away, desperately called out for help. His wide eyes and trembling voice conveyed his sheer terror. What had triggered this alarm was even more spine-tingling - a lurking shark, stealthily prowling nearby. Without hesitation, Dave sprang into action. He relayed swift orders to the captain, directing the boat to a dramatic about-face. The emergency ladder clanked into place at the bow, and the vessel surged toward the sandbar with superheroic action. The Rhythmboat was as if a lifeline had materialised for the stranded boy. With nerves of steel, he climbed the ladder, his heart pounding, and the jaws of danger snapping just beneath the surface. With a final triumphant leap, he found himself safe aboard the Rhythmboat. The Preschool and Middle Rock children are delighted to take the Boaties under their wings, showing care and empathy while passing on knowledge from the Educators on what plants to pull out and asking if they need help. The children model the same respectful behaviour they have experienced, by trusting the Boaties to give it a go, and to be ready to help if they need it. It is heartening for Educators and families to see how the children are in their process of Becoming and developing their identities. Team work makes light (and fun!) work The gardens are a huge space, and it is clear that many hands make light work. Working as a team comes naturally to TG's children. They have a strong sense of Belonging, knowing they have the support of their friends and Educators and also knowing they too can provide support and help to others. They are valued and are an important part of the group. For example, when the children were gardening, they noticed that the worms' toilet was full! (If you don't know what that looks like just ask any one of TG's children! They'll be happy to explain to you!) So together as a team, they poured the worms' water onto the garden, releasing nutritious bacteria back into the soil. TG's children are getting a headstart in sustainability practices. The children understand the seasonal changes and are excited to plant more delicious vegetables, which they can appreciate later on their plates. They always have something to look forward to with each season. EYLF alignments An apparently simple and enjoyable activity in the garden fulfils different sections outlined in the EYLF, specifically EYLF 1.1 Children feel safe, secure and supported and EYLF 2.4 Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment. Mud play is the best fun there is! Let's face it. When we were children we all loved getting muddy and jumping in puddles! So do TG's children! TG's gardens has areas where the vegetables are growing and being taken care of, and there are other areas for different activities, that's why it's so fun to explore! Benefit of... dirt! The Boaties Educators know about the benefits of exposing children to play in the dirt. Playing in nature can boost children's sensory development, creative thinking, and... you may want to write this down, even their immune system! Who would have thought a bit of dirt could do so much good! Recipe for mud The Boaties had a field day watering the dirt in the big garden bed, and they discovered the resulting 'blend' had a most unusual texture! They could mould it and squish it with their fingers! TG's Educators are always quick to notice learning opportunities and how to make them fun as well. With the EYLF always on their minds, they can also take advantage of spontaneous opportunities to further boost the children's learning. Seeing how much fun the children were having with their discovery, the Educators started filling the garden beds with buckets of water for the children to jump about in muddy puddles. Benefits of outdoor play This type of unstructured outdoor play give ample opportunities for the children to exercise, practise social skills and help them make sense of the world. This activity fulfilled Learning Outcome 2 where through mud play, the children were developing a sense of self and belonging of their place in the world around them. Being in and around nature provides the children with opportunities to explore nature, ground themselves and learn to care for the environment and world around them. Perhaps even just reading about this is already inspiring the Inner Child in you to kick off your boots, get out in the garden with a bucket of water and do a bit of stomping about! Take it from TG's children - playing in the dirt, getting messy and going home smelling like the outdoors usually means someone had a good time! Activities at TG's change with the seasons, and with warmer weather, the children know they have lots of activities coming up where they will be exploring water and sensory play! 10 years and going strong! Knowing this is just a typical day at TG's and all the fun the children and Educators are having, is it any wonder that TG's has Educators who have been with TG's for ten years? TG's has seen Educators who started off as parents and who later trained so they could join TG's as an Educator, and there have been TG's children who grew up and returned to TG's as Educators. There is a beautiful environment at TG's that keeps children and Educators happy to return day after day. ✦ headspace Port Macquarie is encouraging young people to shake off the unrealistic expectations that impact their mental health this headspace Day. Celebrate National headspace Day - 12pm, 4th October Ditching Impossible Expectations on headspace Day headspace Day on October 4th is an annual National Day of Awareness that focuses on the mental health and wellbeing of young people, and the ways their family and friends can support them. This day aims to remind us all, about the importance of keeping a healthy headspace and to highlight how we can all take a break, connect, and come together as a community to promote mental health. The year’s focus is all about ‘Ditching Impossible Expectations’ placed on young people to better equip them for life’s ups and downs. We are uniting to breakdown the stigmas, debunk societal expectations and promote positive mental health. This theme encourages young people to celebrate who they are and how far they come through the many adversities they have experienced in recent times. What can you expect? To commemorate this day, headspace Port Macquarie will be opening its centre doors at 12 Short Street to welcome in the community for a free lunchtime BBQ. The team will be offering fun school holidays activities, giveaways, and cake to top it all off. The opportunity for creativity will be on the cards with local artist Brad Collins dropping by to provide a mural art workshop. The centre’s resident ArtSpace room will also be open for some crafty fun focusing on making take home keepsakes. Headspace Port Macquarie Community Engagement Officer Emily Lawson says this is an important date for in the community but particularly young people and those with young people in their lives. “In the past number of years, events where young people can connect, have fun and relax have been limited due to COVID and a host of natural disasters in our region," she said. "This event will allow our community to come together and connect with each other in a positive and creative way.” headspace CEO Jason Trethowan said many young people in Australia have experienced a number of challenges over the past couple of years, including COVID-19, lockdowns and natural disaster. Connection and inclusion are all parts of headspace’s strategic plan to support the growth and wellbeing of young people.
