In Port Macquarie, we celebrated Harmony Day with a Harmony Lunch where each person brought food from their country. Gastronomy is a universal love language and speaks to one of our most basic and essential needs. The sharing of meals has always been one of the most powerful ways to connect with one another, and it's amazing how people from different walks of life come together through food. He met Michiko, a 61-year-old Japanese lady through her daughter Erica, who was working on a farm next to where Ray lives. Neither could speak each other's language and while there's Google Translate to help with the conversation, it also brought about some unexpected misunderstandings! Perhaps this is where gestures and body language help to smooth out the bumps in the road. Michiko hopes to be able to obtain a visa to stay in Australia for a longer period, because despite being lost in translation, both Ray and Michiko have found happiness through their friendship. That is just one story out of so many others that have proven that authentic connections can triumph over barriers. With over 55,000 Harmony Day events to date since the beginning of Harmony Day, one could say that more than ever, given the challenges the world has been facing all this time, people are even more aware of the need for harmony, respect and appreciation of the diversity around us. ✦ There is more to Spain's Holy Week than a parade of people in pointy hats and solemn music. Many are often moved to tears experiencing the processions. Spain's Holy Week is one of the most important festivals of the country, and many wait with bated breath to see the processions. Meet the penitents Easter, or Holy Week, is a big deal, especially in the south of Spain in Andalucia. Both Spaniards and foreigners flock to this region to witness the incredible processions. This is the time when you see the processions of the brotherhoods or fraternities (known as 'cofradías'). You typically see the use of the nazareno or penitential robe for people taking part in the processions. It consists of a tunic, a hood with a pointy tip which is used to hide the face of the wearer, and sometimes a cloak as well. These are the penitents, who take part in the procession to demonstrate their penance. Others carry heavy crosses and even walk the streets barefoot with chains on their feet. Meet the pasos Each fraternity carries huge, elaborate 'floats' (called 'pasos' in Spanish) on their shoulders. These are nothing but light despite what we call them in English, because some weigh more than 5000kg, a weight which is impossible to even remotely imagine. Perhaps 'throne' is a more apt word than 'float' here. These pasos have sculptures of Christ or the Virgin Mary and are intricate art pieces. Some fraternities have owned these pasos for centuries, so they are more than just works of art. They are antiques, history and culture. For the heavy pasos, there are more than 250 members under each throne to carry them along the streets, accompanied by marching bands. A mystical experience There is something mystically hypnotic about watching the swaying sea of hooded penitents marching slowly to the solemn rhythm of brass instruments and drums, with the scent of candle wax and incense in the air. It is one of the most soul-stirring celebrations of the country. It is not uncommon to see penitents and the crowds crying during this event. For many, it is their recognition of their Saviour who gave up his life for them. For others, it is the awareness, regret and penitence they feel at their own wrongdoings and gratitude for the forgiveness they have received. Some are moved by the humility and unity of undergoing the procession together as a fraternity. The pasos can only be lifted if they all work together, and no one is dispensable. A feat of physical and spiritual strength Being a penitent who carries these pasos is considered a lifetime honour and a sign of their devotion and penance. You need to train to be able to lift, move and lower it. Sometimes even on your knees. Doing crossfit at the gym once a week is not going to be enough. Bear in mind also that the penitents are not walking on smooth streets. Many are narrow and paved with cobblestones which makes balancing even more arduous. While these processions can be marathons as long as 8 hours, it doesn't mean the same group carries the pasos all the time! Before you balk, take comfort knowing that they do have shifts and take turns to do it. Kneeling in humility Another challenge apart from the weight of the pasos is, some are so tall and the doors of the cathedral so low that getting the pasos out of the building is in itself already a feat of strength, precision, teamwork and extraordinary patience. The penitents have to kneel and shift the weight on their knees to get out of the building, every one of them holding up the immense weight of the paso on their shoulders. Interview with a young penitent Meet Paula Malvido Soriano, a 21-year-old Spanish girl living in Madrid who felt called to participate in one of the Holy Week processions last year. What made you decide to participate in the Holy Week processions? I decided to join the Holy Week processions when I was 19 because I feel a very strong connection to my faith and I wanted to get fully into the religious traditions that have been present in my life since I was a child. Whenever I went to my town, I would see the processions and a part inside me felt that I wanted to be there. I felt it was a special way to show my devotion in a concrete way that was very important to me. Did you have to receive any training or make any preparations for it? Because I live in Madrid, it was impossible for me to attend the rehearsals and celebrations of my brotherhood, so I could not help in the preparations or "prepare myself". I put that in quotes because here in Madrid, I prepared myself by dedicating time to reflect on the spiritual meaning of the Holy Week for me personally. How did you feel before and after the experience? Before the experience, I was full of excitement and anticipation, but I was also slightly nervous about the responsibility that came with participating in such an important event. After the experience, I felt deeply moved and at peace, with a renewed sense of connection to my faith and to the community that shared this experience with me. Do women participate in carrying the pasos? I know they are very heavy! I don't know that information, in my fraternity specifically, women do not participate carrying the pasos. I think it has always been a tradition carried by men, but women do participate dressed like them, as was my case. Many people are moved to tears during the processions. Why do you think that happens? I think the Holy Week processions are so moving because they give you a special place to think about what Jesus Christ suffered and sacrificed. The music, the pasos, all of that touches you deep down and makes you feel everything from sadness to hope and gratitude. Is religion still something that young people are interested in? Were your friends surprised that you wanted to participate in the processions? In my experience, I see that religion is still relevant to many young people, albeit in different ways. Some of my friends were initially surprised by my decision to participate in the processions, but in the end, they respected my choice, and some even showed interest in better understanding my motivations and experiences. What was the most important thing for you in this Holy Week experience? For me, the most important thing about this experience was feeling more connected to my faith and to the community of believers who shared this spiritual journey with me. Experiencing Holy Week in such a personal and participatory way allowed me to deepen my understanding of the meaning of these religious events and renew my commitment to my spiritual journey. Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience during the procession? Participating in the Holy Week processions was an experience that transformed my faith and my connection to the community of believers. I felt the presence of the divine in every step we took together and experienced a sense of peace and wholeness that I will carry with me long after the processions are over. ✦ Yann Tyng, our Content Writer based in Spain, gets curious about how to make this delicious treat typically eaten in Spain during Easter. ✦ Jump straight to the Torrijas, Spanish Bread Pudding Recipe One of the most valuable things about any culture is its traditional food and recipes. At Brilliant-Online, we love our food and it's a great way to bring people together on any occasion. Easter in Spain is a big deal, with the solemn Holy Week processions being the highlight of the celebrations. On the culinary front, one of the most typical sweets that are served during this time is the humble torrijas. It's a type of bread pudding, which basically consists of dipping slices of bread in a mixture of milk, eggs and sugar. Each family has their unique recipe (the best Spanish food is found in a Spanish grandmother's house, so don't feel you need to spend loads at a Michelin-star restaurant with a year-long waiting list) but what many Spaniards tell me is it's best to use stale bread. Let it sit for a couple of days because stale bread is 'tougher' and can soak up more of the mixture. The beauty of torrijas is really in its simplicity and tradition. It's not a sophisticated, intricate dessert, but it does conjure up wonderful memories for many Spaniards as they recall their grandmothers frying torrijas in the kitchen when they were children. It is typically fried in olive oil, and given our current climate change crisis, this treat is no longer as humble as it used to be. Olive oil prices in Spain have increased by 112% since last year. Yes, you read that right. 112%. Drought and extreme heatwaves have affected the olive trees and production has plummeted as a result. Spain is the world's leading producer of olive oil, and this is a harsh fact of climate change hitting us right between the eyes. A quintessential must-have in the kitchen is now so expensive you'll think twice about frying your food. True blue Spaniards will swear by the olive oil and say you cannot possibly downgrade torrijas by using an alternative oil. Where torrijas used to be a humble dish that was perhaps born out of an idea not to waste stale bread (not unlike our Chinese fried rice using leftover rice and bits and bobs in the fridge to whip up a new dish), it is now a royal treat. So if you are in Spain this time of the year and want to try some torrijas, savour it slowly! ✦ Torrijas, a Spanish Bread Pudding Recipe Ingredients: Milk 500ml 1 cinnamon stick Bit of lemon zest Sugar 100gr 4 slices of stale bread 2 eggs Extra virgin olive oil for frying Water Honey 150g Cinnamon powder (optional) See the recipe for torrijas step-by-step here: As I cannot cook to save my life, I decided to buy a piece of torrijas from a neighbourhood bakery. A traditional bakery will always wrap your goodies in paper and string, which I find rather quaint. I love my torrijas with a nice cup of English tea*. ✦ The Port Macquarie electorate Local Woman of the Year 2024 has been awarded to Sue Ashton in recognition of her tireless work with Koala Conservation Australia. Can you imagine an Australia without koalas? This highly beloved icon of Australia has been under threat and any effort to protect and preserve them deserves to be highlighted. Sue Ashton stands out as a strong presence that is making a difference to the lives of these furry marsupials. And she rightly deserves the honour and award of Local Woman of the Year 2024! Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams commended Sue Ashton for the honour, recognising her passion and the positive impact she has made in our community. “This is a well-deserved honour for Sue and acknowledges her unparalleled commitment and ongoing contribution to our local Koala Hospital over many years,” Mrs Williams said. Believe it or not, there is actually a Koala Hospital right here in Port Macquarie! Sue Ashton has been a Volunteer at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital since August 2017. In her efforts in koala care, Sue has worn many hats as a koala rescuer, as Media Coordinator, President, and has been the Chair of the Koala Conservation Australia Board for several years. Sue was instrumental in applying for and securing a significant NSW Government grant that has allowed the Koala Hospital to embark on the journey of developing a new Koala Hospital on the existing site, which aims to be a world class tourist attraction with over 200 volunteers running the facility. Sue led the team at the Koala Hospital through the difficult period of the black summer bushfires – a time when the Koala Hospital staff and volunteers were deployed to rescue and care for scores of fire affected Koalas. Sue is also a member of FAWNA caring for many sick or injured wildlife at home and providing homecare for young orphaned koalas. In her spare time she is a keen member and supporter of the Wauchope Bonsai Club!  Nature clearly runs in her blood! Be it fires, flood or pandemic Sue is a true trailblazer, leading with good grace, composure and compassion – for flora, fauna, especially her beloved koalas, and people. “Sue is an inspiration for other women in the community to realise their potential and make strides to ensure the Hastings is an empowering place for women to live, work and visit,” Mrs Williams said. ✦ Elizabeth Regin muses on opening the way for children to explore any field where their interests and skills take them. Marie Curie, Ada Lovelace, and Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier - these women have always been my heroes with their legacy etched in my mind - they’re all scientists who revolutionised modern science throughout history. Who cannot be captivated by the pictures of Marie Curie captured in real-time during the fifth Solvay conference in 1927 where she was the only woman amongst the most recognisable names of modern science? Thanks to more exposure from books and movies like Hidden Figures about real-life inspirational African-American mathematicians who worked for NASA and the series, Lessons in Chemistry, we have a more in-depth awareness of the obstacles these women faced in society and the STEM sector they’ve worked in. Growing up in an Asian culture, many girls and women I know, including my mother and grandmother, faced these same obstacles - you’d think it was more prevalent before the ‘60s but these struggles coupled with traditional parenting beliefs were still commonplace. Girls’ education in the family was placed on the back burner while boys were encouraged to have “intellectual pursuits”. Progress has been made albeit slowly with modern parenting influencing some change, along with numerous complex factors like the breaking of cultural and gender roles in society and technological advancements. I am heartened to see that there are more women in the STEM sector; women now make up 26% of the STEM workforce. Though the numbers might seem small, their work has a significant and pivotal impact on the STEM sector. These women deserve more recognition for their contributions and for paving the way for the future generation. There are also now cool STEM courses available like coding and robotics for kids starting from as young as 4 years old. As a modern parent, education, especially scientific literacy, is one of the top priorities in my children’s lives with the importance of being cultured and cultivated as our household philosophy. In her book “Dans un mois, dans un an”, French writer Françoise Sagan wrote “La culture est ce qui reste quand on ne sait rien faire” which to us means that culture is like a parachute - it is the only thing that will save you when there’s nothing left. The best Scientists are Children- I am in awe of my children’s insatiable curiosity for exploring, learning, and questioning. We believe in trying our best to explain facts about how things work. We try to cultivate our kids through fun science activities and always keeping their library accessible. We hope to show them through these activities and positive affirmations that start from home, science is for everyone and a key to knowledge to reach for the stars. Perhaps Victoria and Henry will aspire to be and also be amongst many more Marie Curies, Katherine Johnsons, and Ada Lovelaces just like I was. ❋ Fun Science Experiments for Children. Enjoy!
