✦ With the focus of health this month, and Spring 2022 well and truly underway, now is a good time to take a moment and reflect on the importance of health in a community.
Bron Watson from Business Port Macquarie shares her thoughts.
According to the World Health Organisation, Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health is not only something we experience individually, but the health of a person is also the product of their environment. A healthy environment aka the health of our local community, is critical to the growth and development of our region.
Let’s take a look at the three main areas outlined by the World Health Organisation.
Physical Health
If you take a look around our region, there are a plethora of places to go, things to do with a real focus on being physical.
For some it may be a brisk walk along the break-wall, for others it may be a ride down Ocean Drive training for the Ironman, or perhaps taking a camp chair and watching the sun set over the Lighthouse.
The greatest wealth is health. – Virgil
Physical health can mean so many things, the point here, is that we all choose to care for our bodies in different ways. There is nothing like the smell of the surf, waves slowly breaking over your feet and sand between your toes…literally standing at one of our magical beaches watching the waves roll in.
Mental Well-Being
As the team from Chess Connect say, “let’s call mental health, mental fitness”. Where we work on building resilience, learning to deal with unpredictable adversity and challenges in life. The last few years have certainly shown us that mental ‘health’ or ‘fitness’ is something we all need, and with so many providers working in this industry, there are many to choose from.
The term mental health is bandied around a lot, and what are considered mental health conditions like depression and anxiety, are often substituted for the term mental health. Mental Health Awareness month is on right now during October, mental health is about wellness rather than illness.
Research shows that improved levels of mental health are associated with increased learning, creativity and productivity, which directly impacts physical health and improves life expectancy.
Social Well-Being
If there is one thing our region loves to do, it is to be social. From events, to cafés and restaurants, to indoor and outdoor attractions, the Hastings region provides a fantastic opportunity to be social.
Social well-being can be defined as the sharing, developing, and sustaining of meaningful relationships with others. This allows you to feel authentic and valued and provides a sense of connectedness and belonging. More info Betterup.
How do we find and build these connections in our local community?
A great place to start is to check out the Member Directory of Business Port Macquarie. Formally known as Port Chamber of Commerce, Business Port Macquarie aims to provide an active networking platform for their members and the greater community.
