  • Playing is Learning for Life with TG's Child Care Play Experts - the children!

✦ Masters of how to learn through play, TG's children shine at what they do best - play! Build curiosity | Build motor skills | Build confidence | Build respect | Build life skills | Build creativity | Contact TG's Child Care | Careers “When children pretend, they’re using their imaginations to move beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magic wand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.” – Fred Rogers Child's play takes on a whole new meaning at TG's Child Care . Gardens that make playing a joy TG's beautiful award-winning gardens have been specially designed to be natural, nurturing, safe and secure spaces for children to play, live and learn. These exciting and dynamic spaces are where children can explore and develop their fine and gross motor skills, build curiosity, social and emotional intelligence, engage in active and passive play. Jump into an old boat and have an adventure on the high seas with your gang of pirates. Get down close to the ground and hunt for little bugs and see what they're up to this busy morning. If it's a warm day out there's water play waiting and you can pretend you're having a nice day at the beach. The imagination of a child knows no limits, and it is not limited by their geographical space. Hey! Where did the bug go? What makes TG's stand out is how they have implemented their philosophy of Playing is Learning for Life and blended in their sustainability values as well. Armed with their imagination and with Nature by their side, TG's children have endless hours of learning through play. It is thanks to Trevor Kee that TG's Play Experts have these beautiful gardens to explore and have their adventures. He brought his extensive landscaping and design background to create these dynamic, sustainable, natural environments where children can thrive to their fullest potential. We may be living in an urban environment, but Trevor really wanted to invite nature into TG's playspaces, so you will notice Nature's touch as you walk through the gardens - there are paved pathways, timber bridges and transition areas that use natural materials and local resources. Sustainability is an important value at TG's, and even their gardens are in keeping with sustainability practices. Exploring nature is part of their sustainability practices as it builds a foundation of values for making the world a better place. TG's children develop independent and creative minds through playing in these gardens. It's where they learn to engage in collective thinking with their peers and build relationships with each other. Through exploring, the children identify their strengths and discover their own unique gifts. When you are bathed in an environment rich in love, care and respect, you simply grow. It takes two wings to fly TG's Play Experts are supported by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) on one side and the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on the other. The EYLF is from the Australian Government's Department of Education which dictates five major outcomes that extend and enrich children’s learning from birth to five years and through the transition to school. These are the five outcomes from the EYLF: Children have a strong sense of identity Children are connected with and contribute to their world Children have a strong sense of wellbeing Children are confident and involved learners Children are effective communicators The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is where TG's implements indigenous programs in all of their six centres across regional Australia. It is part of their sustainability values and it boosts the children's eco and social intelligence. The children are supported by indigenous wisdom and they look at how they impact the environment, social aspects and economy of their locations in a way that is relevant and identifiable for them. It builds pride and responsibility when the children realise they, in their own way, can make a difference to care for the planet and their communities. They may be wearing ordinary clothes but inside, every child is a superhero who wants to and can save the planet. So with this balance of EYLP and RAP, TG's Educators design quality outcomes for the children, and equip them with the skills they need to navigate through life. What TG's children foster here is a life-long compassion, love and respect for themselves, their environment and their communities. Why play? Play is trusting the brain to do what it does best i.e. learn. Take a look at a typical day in the life of a TG's Play Expert, and you may find yourself asking if there's an adult version of TG's that you can sign up for! Here are all the reasons why playing is simply the best way to learn. 1. Build curiosity Children are naturally curious, they'll explore and touch things, grab whatever catches their eye, keep asking you "Why?" until you run out of answers. At TG's, the children are encouraged to explore and ask questions. They are given the space to simply wonder why something works the way it does, and through their own exploration they come to their own conclusions. TG's Educators are always on hand to guide them and together, the children pick up new knowledge which really sticks in the brain because they did it themselves! It's not about 'feeding' random, irrelevant, meaningless information to children. TG's Educators plan activities that are relevant to their interests, experiences and backgrounds and take into account the unique learning journey of each child. Ooo...it's cold! And where is all that water coming from? A simple block of ice with dinosaurs frozen in them becomes a most exciting activity! Put on your Dora the Explorer hat and go on an archaeological dig! Feel how cold the ice is and how it starts to feel wet when it starts to melt. Children can be incredibly careful if you tell them how fragile the buried dinosaurs are and how we have to be patient and gently brush off bits of ice. And brrr...it's cold, so make sure you wrap up and have your warm coat on! One simple play activity and you are learning about science, geography, history and self-care without realising it! 2. Build motor skills How high can you jump? TG's Play Experts love being outdoors and getting a good dose of exercise in their strong little bodies! They're always up for a game and if it involves quite a bit of running, jumping, tunnelling, crawling and rolling, they're in! TG's outdoor areas have plenty of space for the children to engage in different physical games and you'll always hear tons of laughter and squeals! See how high or how far you can jump! The children are not at all interested in how they are training their motor skills, they just know they are having FUN and they want more! TG's Play Experts get stronger and healthier each day when they engage in outdoor games that also foster team work and team spirit. 3. Build confidence "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." - Pablo Picasso What are your superpowers? There is something incredibly empowering about seeing a child play. Their total trust in their make believe and pretend world allows them to fully explore their gifts. When you play and let your imagination lead, nothing is impossible. A child's world is wonderfully rich, and in their world of play and imagination, they can be anything and anyone. Nothing is holding them back. What a wonderful way to build confidence, trust and self-esteem! As adults, perhaps it would behoove us to remember what it was like as a child and tap into all our unexplored and forgotten talents! What would your Inner Child want to do if you were to invite them to play? 4. Build respect At TG's Urangan, their Reconciliation Action Plan involves going on a beach kindy every fortnight. This is something the children really look forward to! Getting out into nature and just smelling the sea, feeling the soft warm sand sink below their feet...it's an environment absolutely primed for learning. Look at what we found! You can show a child a picture of a beach and illustrations of corals and they may well forget it soon enough. Take them out to a real beach and have them actually notice dried up corals and letting them touch it and feel the texture, the roughness, the little holes in them and how light or heavy they are...and the children will be so fascinated they'll be talking about it for hours and days after. Very often, families learn about what the children have been doing at TG's from the children themselves! They are so excited about what they have learnt they can't wait to go back and share it with their families! "Did you know that...?" is a common thing to hear at the dinner table after a day of Playing is Learning for Life at TG's! The next time you go on your personal beach kindy, why not slow down, really stop and notice the nature around you. Where's that crab scurrying off to? Do you notice how ticklish the waves feel when they wash over your feet and then drain away? And most importantly, something TG's Play Experts know by heart is to leave gentle footprints wherever they go. They respect the environment and land they walk on, and make sure they take real good care of it and not leave anything behind that does not belong there. 5. Build life skills Do you remember how you used to play pretend when you were a child? All you needed were some old boxes, a blanket or two, an old hat and you cooked up stories worthy of being made into a Shakespeare play! Pretend play is a way children 'play out' what they see in the world around them. It's how they are making sense of the world. It's their way of trying out 'roles' to see how it would feel and it helps them to get into the shoes of another person and imagine what they would do, say or behave. It's also how they interact with their peers and learn to negotiate, share, feel empathy for, figuring out what works and what doesn't. A pretend picnic, or tea party, or shopping at the supermarket, or going to the doctor's, or the police running after the thief...the list of pretend play scenarios are endless. A lot of it has to do with what different people do in their communities, and TG's has always enjoyed either inviting the local firemen over with their exciting big trucks or taking the children out and getting to know their friendly grocer in the area. It builds a sense of community and appreciation. And...that'll be $3.50 thank you! Adults have never really lost their interest in pretend play - just look at the popularity of cosplay for example, and you'll see the child in us still wants to engage in pretend play! 6. Build creativity Beyond some basic rules of keeping things fair and everyone safe, there are really no other rules when it comes to playing. There is no right or wrong answer or way to do it. It fully allows children to be as creative as they like, and TG's Educators observe closely how each child responds to play, what their preferences are, how they like to work, how they problem solve, what gifts they are unconsciously developing. Hmm...How can I make this stay and not fall over? There is no competition and no final end when it comes to play. Children learn best in a stress-free environment, and it's the process that brings joy. TG's Educators and families always celebrate their final creation and there are many milestones to celebrate there. At the end of the year on Graduation Day, the children present a portfolio of what they have created to their families and there is so much pride when one looks at how much each child has grown and developed. At TG's, every child is celebrated. The next time your child invites you to get into some creative play with them, see if you can be just like them, and just enjoy the process. Get messy, get muddy, not know what you're going to create but simply having lots of fun! It could well help to spark off your own creativity at work! Educators play too! Did you know that TG's Educators love to play too? It's one of the defining characteristics of an Educator in the TG's Family! That's what makes them so much fun to be around. They fully understand what it's like to be a child, and they know what children need. When TG's Educators are not engaged in play with the children, they are also equally fun-loving when they are in their teams. Paddling the canoe together is how TG's builds strong team spirit across their centres, and it's how they continue to retain quality professionals on their team. TG's Educators practise what they preach, and they walk the talk of Playing is Learning for Life. They're not afraid to show their goofy or silly side! With Educators like that, it's no wonder the children are excited to go to TG's everyday! TG's Educators love going to work to play! Playing it Forward So, are you excited for Playing is Learning for Life yet? We certainly are feeling a wee nostalgic now about our schooldays and all those days of endless playing. • The Story of Françoise Lucius - A Heart That Builds Community in Belair, Luxembourg

✦ Be inspired by how one woman's gentle spirit and gracious heart brought Belair in Luxembourg to life, shaping the enduring traditions of its schools and community. A Heart That Builds Community: The Story of Françoise Lucius When you meet Françoise, you’re instantly drawn in by her quiet grace. There’s a gentle strength about her - an inviting calmness that makes you feel, somehow, that everything is going to be alright. But beneath that serene exterior is a woman whose unwavering dedication has shaped an entire community. Françoise Lucius , whose grace have left a lasting mark on the community Her work didn’t just touch lives in the school district of Belair, Luxembourg - it transformed them. With kindness, determination, and an ever-present smile, Françoise helped weave the very fabric of the school’s heart and soul. Through laughter, tradition, and happiness, she brought families closer, created lasting memories for children, and built bridges between schools and the community. Her legacy is one of connection - and love. Humble Beginnings, Enduring Spirit Françoise’s lifelong commitment to giving began when she was just a young girl in the Scouts. It was there that her love for community, tradition, and service was planted - and it has flourished ever since. Even now, more than four decades later, she’s still an active Scout, sharing that same joyful spirit with her children and continuing the cycle of care and camaraderie that shaped her own childhood. Françoise and her daughter, then in primary school, sharing the Scout spirit A New Chapter in Belair One of the most meaningful chapters of Françoise’s community journey began some 20 years ago, when her children started preschool in Belair. As they grew through the local fundamental school system, Françoise devoted herself wholeheartedly to making school life joyful, welcoming, and meaningful - not just for her own children, but for every child in the community. Belair, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg by glodik At that time, Belair was just beginning to bloom. The streets were still quiet, the plots of land a little wider, and a warm sense of togetherness was slowly starting to take root. The Luxembourg fundamental school district served children from ages 3 to 11, spanning Cycles 1 through 4. At its heart were four local schools: Gaston Diderich, Aloyse Kayser, X Septembre, and a small preschool affectionately known as Yolande. Avenue X school by MMFE In those early days, there was no formal parent committee - only a parents’ non-profit organisation active within one of the schools. Françoise and her husband, Christian, naturally stepped into that role - quietly, without fanfare. With warmth, kindness, and an open heart, they brought Luxembourgish traditions to life, encouraged a spirit of connection, and helped shape a sense of belonging that would define the school years for many families. It was a time before text chains and social media, when things came together through simple conversations and neighbourly connection. Françoise seemed to know everyone - or at least knew someone who did. She had a gentle way of bringing people together, often beginning with a soft, “Let’s try this.” And somehow, from those few words, something truly special and beautiful would always begin to grow. The Magic of Kleeschen One of the first traditions they wholeheartedly expanded upon was the visit of Kleeschen for St. Nicolas Day . It was Christian who would don the costume, with Françoise by his side planning every joyful detail. In the early days, he lacked the traditional golden shoes - but ever the resourceful duo, they improvised, crafting “golden” strings for his feet. In the weeks leading up to his arrival, children prepared festive songs, their voices ringing with joy and excitement. When Kleeschen finally appeared, the sparkle in their eyes said it all - a moment of pure wonder. One wide-eyed little girl once whispered, “Oh, it’s the real Kleeschen!” - a memory that still brings a laugh to Françoise’s heart. Françoise and Christian bringing Kleeschen to life With care, the couple began by handing out mandarins, chocolates, and nuts, followed by the beloved Boxemännchen - a brioche figure that had become a symbol of the season. As food allergies became more of a concern, Françoise thoughtfully adapted the tradition, offering only the Boxemännchen to ensure all children could share in the celebration. Thanks to the dedication of Françoise and Christian, the visit from Kleeschen and the gift of the Boxemännchen continue to this day - a cherished tradition that fills schools with delight and reminds us that kindness, when shared with love, leaves behind a lasting sparkle of magic. The Joy of Carnival and La Boum: End of School Year Party The annual Carnival Ball for the schools became a wonderland of colour and joy under Françoise’s thoughtful guidance and a close-knit group of parents. There were clowns, face paint, balloon animals, and the unmistakable sound of children’s laughter echoing through the halls. For the older students, the fun continued with the much-anticipated Boum! - a celebration that marked the end of the school year in unforgettable style. La Boum flyer - a joyful finale to the school year for the older students A Place for Play One of Françoise’s heartfelt contributions to the school was the creation of a play area in the courtyard - a lively, welcoming space where children could laugh, imagine, and simply be themselves. With her gentle determination, she brought it to life, gathering what was needed and turning a dull spot into something magnificent. And in that space, with memories to make and room to dream, her love for the children shone brightly in every thoughtful detail. A Voice for Change Françoise’s gentle demeanour never stopped her from speaking up when it mattered. When serious health concerns arose in one of the school buildings - issues with rats and mould - she wrote to the mayor with both urgency and care. Afterwards, asbestos was discovered and the children were asked to discard their belongings for safety, and classes moved into temporary containers. But Françoise didn’t stop there. She advocated for better resources and conditions, writing again to ensure the children were not forgotten. Her persistence ensured that even during difficult transitions, the students were supported and cared for. Moments That Last One of Françoise’s most beloved contributions began as a simple gesture: drawings from children to their teachers. That idea soon blossomed into full school yearbooks - lovingly photographed, designed, and compiled by Françoise and a group of dedicated parents. These keepsakes, filled with laughter and school-day snapshots, became treasures cherished by students, parents, and teachers alike. The tradition was so warmly embraced that, in time, the schools themselves took it over - a beautiful continuation of something she helped bring to life with care, creativity, and love. From simple drawings to cherished yearbooks Wheels, Markets, and Morning Croissants From organising fun-filled Bicycle Days to hosting bustling little flea markets, Françoise had a gift for bringing learning and laughter together in the most radiant ways. Bicycle Day quickly became a favourite among the children - a day full of cheer, sunshine, and the hum of tiny wheels racing. Françoise, together with a group of devoted and loving parents, made sure it was more than just fun. She invited a friendly local bicycle specialist who patiently taught the children how to care for their bikes - how to check the brakes, oil a chain, and keep everything rolling safely. It was hands-on, heartwarming, and deeply memorable. In that same spirit, they created a cheerful flea market where children could bring their old toys and books to sell. With coins in hand and proud little smiles, they got their first playful taste of responsibility, all in a setting that felt like a fair made just for them. On the first day of school - when hugs lingered a little longer and eyes were a little misty - Françoise was there too, offering warm croissants and hot coffee to parents, helping to ease the goodbyes with simple kindness. And when school outings came around, she made special bags printed with a logo representing the parent community. They weren’t just practical - they were small tokens of unity, gentle reminders that each child was part of something bigger, something caring. The beauty of it all was in how naturally it came to her. Françoise didn’t organise for recognition, and she never sought thanks. She simply loved her community - and in return, her community grew stronger, gentler, and more connected because of her. Behind every joyful event and thoughtful detail was the same quiet, constant force: love. The Heart of the Community In Belair, Françoise wasn’t just known - she was cherished. With her gentle nature and open smile, she had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether it was a nervous parent on the first day of school or a teacher juggling the chaos of a school event, Françoise was there - kind, calm, and ready to help. She had a gift for bringing people together. Parents, teachers, educators, school staff like the concierge, community groups, nearby childcares, even local businesses – all became part of a network she gently wove, built on support, cooperation, and shared joy. There was never a sense of obligation, only a shared willingness to pitch in. One moment, she might be coordinating supplies for the summer festivities; the next, working with a parent to sponsor Kleeschen’s costume or finding just the right popcorn machine to lend some whimsy to Carnival. With Françoise, these weren’t just tasks - they were opportunities to build connection. What made her special wasn’t just the scale of what she did, but the thought she put into every small moment. She understood that school life was made up of memories that children carry with them for years. So, she made sure those moments were filled with light and enchantment. A Lasting Legacy Françoise is more than a community leader. She’s a mother, a daughter, a friend, a builder of traditions, and for many years, the beating heart of Belair’s schools. Even while working as an interior designer, she made time to pick up her children for lunch, often inviting their friends to share a meal - her home always open, always warm. Today, her children are grown, but her impact remains woven into the lives of so many. Her name is spoken with respect and gratitude, her efforts still visible in the customs that carry on, and her spirit continues to guide new generations of parents who follow in her footsteps. Françoise’s legacy isn’t marked by titles or accolades, but by something far more meaningful: the bonds she helped form, the adventures she inspired, and the love she gave so freely. To this day, she remains a vibrant presence in the wider community - a gentle force of goodness making the world around her just a little brighter, one thoughtful act at a time. ❋ Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • Women in Science: A Modern Parent's Perspective

✦ Elizabeth Regin muses on opening the way for children to explore any field where their interests and skills take them. Henry gets curious about the planets! Marie Curie, Ada Lovelace, and Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier — these women have always been my heroes, their legacies etched in my mind. They are scientists who revolutionized modern science throughout history. The Solvay Conference, 1927 (Photo: rarehistoricalphotos.com) Who could not be captivated by the pictures of Marie Curie, captured in real time during the Fifth Solvay Conference in 1927 , where she was the only woman amongst the most recognisable names in modern science? Thanks to greater exposure from books and films like Hidden Figures , which tells the story of real-life inspirational African-American mathematicians who worked for NASA, and the series Lessons in Chemistry , we now have a deeper awareness of the obstacles these women faced in society and in the STEM sector in which they worked. Growing up in an Asian culture, many girls and women I know - including my mother and grandmother - faced these same obstacles. You’d think it was more prevalent before the ’60s, but these struggles, coupled with traditional parenting beliefs, were still commonplace. Girls’ education in the family was placed on the back burner, while boys were encouraged to pursue 'intellectual pursuits'. Victoria is exploring to the moon and back! Progress has been made, albeit slowly, with modern parenting influencing some change - alongside numerous complex factors such as the breaking of cultural and gender roles in society, and technological advancements. I am heartened to see that there are more women in the STEM sector; women now make up 26% of the STEM workforce . A head full of stars, planets and mysteries of the universe! Though the numbers might seem small, their work has had a significant and pivotal impact on the STEM sector. These women deserve greater recognition for their contributions and for paving the way for future generations. There are also now cool STEM courses available like coding and robotics for kids starting from as young as 4 years old. As a modern parent, I consider education -especially scientific literacy - one of the top priorities in my children’s lives, with an emphasis on being cultured and cultivated as part of our household philosophy. In her book Dans un mois, dans un an , French writer Françoise Sagan wrote, 'La culture est ce qui reste quand on ne sait rien faire,' which, to us, means that culture is like a parachute - it’s the only thing that will save you when there’s nothing left. The best scientists are children - I am in awe of my children’s insatiable curiosity for exploring, learning, and questioning. Where does Victoria want to travel to when she grows up? We believe in doing our best to explain how things work. We try to cultivate our children’s curiosity through fun science activities and by always keeping their library accessible. Through these activities and the positive affirmations that begin at home, we hope to show them that science is for everyone - and a key to knowledge that can help them reach for the stars. Perhaps Victoria and Henry will aspire to be - and one day be amongst - many more Marie Curies, Katherine Johnsons, and Ada Lovelaces, just as I once did. ❋ Fun Science Experiments for Children. • Plastic Free July placing sustainability front and centre

✦ Much has been documented and we are all aware how serious the issue of plastic pollution is to the welfare of our planet. Just like climate change, it is a looming threat to our very existence and something that cannot be brushed under the carpet to be left for future consideration. The month of July is designated as a plastic free month where people and businesses are urged to refuse the use of single-use plastic items. Plastic Free July is a global movement that has raised awareness and motivated hundreds of millions of people from hundreds of countries to take a stand on plastic pollution and strive to create a healthier, more beautiful and sustainable planet. July 3 specifically is ‘ International Plastic Bag Free Day ’, as self-explanatory as it gets. Turtles are often known to mistake discarded plastic bags for jelly fish before eating them As stated, we are aware of the perils and the ominous warnings that plastic pollution presents and that is why this article chooses not to dwell on that but instead to look at some of the positive strides being made by countries, organisations and individuals. Like with any robust structure the foundation is key, a dynamic that is very much the same in this instance where policies set at government level are key to driving positive progress. UN Member States endorsing a historic resolution at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi on March 2 last year to End Plastic Pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement by 2024 is a promising stride for sure. The globally binding legal agreement, set to be finalised by the end of next year, is expected to: “Reflect diverse alternatives to address the full lifecycle of plastics, the design of reusable and recyclable products and materials, and the need for enhanced international collaboration to facilitate access to technology, capacity building and scientific and technical cooperation.” Many of the governments involved have offered encouraging pledges of support; “The resolution will clearly take us towards a future with no plastic pollution, including in the marine environment,” said Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi, Japan’s Environment Minister. “International partnerships will be crucial in tackling a problem that affects all of us, and the progress made at UNEA reflects this spirit of collaboration,” said Dr Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, Rwanda’s Minister of Environment. Currently Germany is the world leader in waste management, recycling 70% of all waste produced , including plastic. Austria has one of the world’s highest recycling rates where 96% of its population adhere to a strict waste recycling process and plastic bags have been banned since 2020. In Switzerland it is mandatory to recycle and failure to do so can result in fines for offenders. China banned single-use plastic bags and utensils from its major cities in 2021, while single-use straws were banned nationwide. A full run-down on individual country action can be found in this Sustainable Ocean Alliance report . Plastic bottles are a major contributor to pollution, especially in our oceans and landfills. Corporate responsibility At corporate level sustainability has become a mission-critical directive in recent times – in other words a BIG deal. Failure to have a robust policy demonstrating a firm commitment to sustainability is seriously frowned upon and can ultimately impact market share – something board directors and owners don’t take too kindly to! Coca-Cola is arguably one of, if not the most recognisable brands in the world. However, worryingly for the beverage behemoth, a 2018 Brand Audit Report showed that Coca-Cola branded goods were the most common items found in beach cleanups in 42 countries. The company responded by pledging to have 50% recycled material in all its packaging by 2030, collecting and recycling a bottle or can for each one that it sells by 2030 and making 60% of packaging either refilled or collected for recycling. The fact it launched new bottles made out of 100% recycled materials to selected areas of the United States in February 2021 is a positive sign that it can follow through on its promises. More recent projects like the “ Coke Recycle Me with Trash Lucky '' campaign in Thailand are also positive as the company encourages residents of one of the worst offending countries of plastic pollution to act in a more responsible and accountable manner. McDonald’s has pledged that by 2025 all of its 36,000 restaurants in 122 locations around the world use packaging, including straws, made from renewable, recycled, or certified sustainable sources, while Nestlé has committed to all its packaging being recyclable or reusable by the same year, as has Estee Lauder. Unilever has committed to make 100% of its plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable, also by 2025. Avery Dennison launched its Plastic End Cap Recycling Program in Australia last year which focuses on waste material generated in operational use, diverting discarded plastic waste to create raw materials for everyday products. Similar pledges have been made by a whole range of companies that you can read more about here . Likewise, there are a number of smaller companies and startups that are structuring themselves around a more sustainable approach to waste management and preservation of our planet. Talking the talk and walking the walk are, of course, two totally different things although it does appear that companies and governments are realising that a responsible and feasible waste management policy is absolutely imperative, particularly in relation to plastic waste. The ‘New Plastics Economy Global Commitment’, launched by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN Environment Programme in 2018, is a hugely positive initiative that can keep things on track as it strives to achieve a fully-functional circular economy for plastic, in which it never becomes waste or pollution. There are over 500 signatories pledged to support this project, including L’Oréal, Mars, Incorporated, Nestlé, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever, Walmart, Amcor and Veolia. The sports industry is also taking steps in the right direction to drive sustainability and limit plastic pollution. L’Oréal and Avery Dennison Collaborate to Eliminate Label Waste Small steps can yield big results Of course any structure is only as effective as the sum of its parts, and while it is crucial that positive action is being taken at the highest levels in the public and private sectors, ultimately every person can play their part. Small steps can yield big results so adopting a more ethical and sustainable approach to our daily routines can have a much grander impact. Recycle and reuse goods, stop using single-use plastics such as containers, carry bags and straws and lower the number of plastic-based products we purchase and use. Use a reusable shopping bag each time you go to the store instead of using an endless supply of plastic bags and try to buy more eco-friendly and sustainable products from trusted suppliers. It is certainly encouraging to read that Generation Z (those born after 1997) and millennials regard sustainability as a huge deal , something that is important enough to define their lifestyle and them as a person. A recent UK survey revealed that 90% of Gen Z consumers have made changes to be more sustainable in their daily lives and they would be willing to spend 10% more to acquire sustainable products. It’s been said countless times before: we only have one planet and it needs our help right now, so let’s make sure we are all adopting the best possible approach we can to play our part and help out to ensure a more sustainable and brighter future. • Elizabeth Regin on Traditional vs Modern Parenting - Potty Training

✦ How has potty training evolved across generations of parenting? Elizabeth Regin shares little Victoria's potty training adventures! Victoria’s potty training is a success! A few weeks ago, her pediatrician complimented her ability to go on her own and not wear diapers during the day. He said she was in advance for her age (she’s 2 years and 4 months) but we could just dream on for night potty. The dream has come true and Victoria wakes up on her own during naps and at night to go to the toilet. Little Victoria is having fun with her potty adventures! My mother told me that my grandmother used to put me on the potty every morning and waited for something to happen. That’s traditional parenting, I guess. I tried to approach it in a modern parenting way: trusting my baby’s readiness and here’s what I think attributed to Victoria’s potty training success. Potty Training Success. Yay to Modern Parenting! 👶🏻 Victoria’s personality: We’ve always joked that Victoria is a Boss Baby like the movie, sent from Baby Corp. She’s serious and full of concentration in everything she does. So potty was just another thing she had calculated in her head on how to do it right. 👶🏻 Switching to diaper pants and underwear: Going to potty on her own became easier with Victoria knowing how to put on and take off her pants on her own. Eventually, we dropped the diapers and she stopped wanting to wear them.  👶🏻 Being flexible: Victoria uses the potty or the toilet with the seat depending on her preference. 👶🏻 Being consistent: I think it was monumental that Papa and I were on the same page together and having consistency brought stability to a new situation. 👶🏻 Readiness: Identifying she was ready and when she wasn’t. We didn’t push it. 👶🏻 Setting examples: We believe Victoria gained encouragement by seeing how the older babies use the toilet and potty at her childcare. 👶🏻 Not reacting when there was an accident: We don’t make it a big deal - a “non-event”. 👶🏻 Having fun: When Victoria first started, we used a sticker reward system and decorated the toilet with her paintings. She also has books around the toilet. 👶🏻 Encouraging independence: Victoria enjoys flushing and using toilet paper so we let her do that herself. 👶🏻 Practicing going outside of home as much as possible: We brought the toilet seat where we can and she was comfortable enough to go in different places. Curious about poo Victoria exclaims, “I did it!” every time she does potty. We’re very proud of her. We know it’s a big milestone and intimate learning process for children; my husband had mentioned something interesting: in one of his training with a psychologist, they talked about how children are very curious about their poo when they start potty training. They do not yet understand that something coming out from them is not a living thing. Children try to identify it by asking if their poo has eyes. They might need to wave goodbye to it before flushing to reach the realisation that it is just dead waste. It has certainly been a learning process for us as parents as well. We look forward to potty training our baby boy in the future. We know how completely different our children are so one thing might not work as well on the other. Parents need support too While there are many articles and books about this stage of life, the sharing of experiences from other parents helped the most. Great job, parents! We hope potty training with your baby has been rewarding, even though it can also be very tiring! We’re immensely proud of Victoria. ⭐👏🏻🩷 Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • Fostering Traditions Through Food and Storytelling: A Bridge Between Generations

✦ October 27th is Grandparents Day in Australia . Grandparents hold the key to family traditions, and one of the most enjoyable ways to connect with grandchildren is through the sharing of food and stories. In families with mixed nationalities or cultures, these traditions take on an even richer dimension. The blending of flavours, customs, and histories offers grandchildren a unique and cherished connection to their roots. Here’s how something as simple as food and storytelling can create lasting family traditions that your grandchildren will cherish as they grow older. The power of food in building traditions Food is a universal language, and in families with diverse cultural backgrounds, it becomes a delicious way to pass down heritage. Grandparents can create traditions by cooking special dishes from each culture and involving their grandchildren in the process. Whether it’s preparing a traditional Malaysian dish alongside an Australian favourite , or blending flavours from Italian and Indian cuisines, the kitchen becomes a space for bonding, learning, and cultural exchange. Henry and Victoria can't get enough of Alsacien fromage blanc! Left: Victoria tries Asian mooncake  for the first time and is deciding on the verdict of this strange sweet! Right: Victoria tries Asian tau sa pau  (steamed red bean buns). Encourage grandchildren to participate in the cooking process—chopping vegetables, learning family recipes, and understanding the stories behind each dish. This creates not just a culinary tradition but a learning experience where they discover their roots through food. These kitchen memories become moments they’ll treasure and pass down to future generations, keeping family traditions alive. Little Victoria surrounded by grandmothers' love Storytelling is a way of passing down family and cultural histories Once the table is set and the meal enjoyed, storytelling becomes the perfect complement to the family tradition. In multicultural families, grandparents can share stories from different parts of the world, blending histories, languages , and customs. Whether it's tales of their own childhood, adventures from their travels , or the story of how different cultures merged within the family, these stories provide grandchildren with a sense of identity and belonging. Grandma tells stories best! Sharing family stories also helps grandchildren understand the significance of their cultural heritage. By hearing how their grandparents navigated different cultures , they can appreciate the blending of traditions that make their family unique. For example, stories about how grandparents celebrated holidays or adapted traditions to a new country can give grandchildren a deep sense of connection to their diverse roots. Blending cultural traditions as a unique legacy In mixed-nationality families, creating new traditions that blend both cultures offers grandchildren the best of both worlds. You can celebrate holidays from both sides of the family, prepare festive meals from different cultures, and teach grandchildren the significance behind each tradition. These blended traditions become a beautiful legacy, giving grandchildren a sense of pride in their diverse background. Little Victoria wearing her Singapore Girl batik dress in Luxembourg! By creating traditions centered around food and storytelling, grandparents can help grandchildren connect to their heritage in a meaningful way. The shared meals and family stories will become cherished memories, strengthening the bond between generations and ensuring that cultural traditions continue to thrive. ❋ Read more Brilliant family stories: Traditional vs Modern Parenting Embracing Baby Led Weaning: A Modern Parenting Approach How the world celebrates Mother's Day The Tale of Modern Day Fatherhood Elizabeth Regin on Traditional vs Modern Parenting - Potty Training Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight!
