✦ Flight training at Hastings District Flying Club has given Aarohi Deshmukh the resilience and drive to make a difference by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Dig Deep.
Hastings District Flying Club celebrated their Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation 2024 on Saturday, 7th December 2024. It was a time for the community to come together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of student pilots, experienced aviators, and dedicated club members.
One special story stood out during the presentation that evening - a young girl who has set her mind on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Aarohi Deshmukh is a former student of Ray Lind (Vice President, Chief Flying Instructor and Club Captain at the Hastings District Flying Coub). She is currently studying in Norwich, on England’s east coast. Aarohi has taken on the extraordinary challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest freestanding mountain. She is doing this to support Dig Deep, a charity that works in Bomet County, Kenya. This is one of the most underserved regions in the country, where two-thirds of the population lack clean water, over half don’t have safe toilets, and children lack basic hygiene education.
Aarohi’s mission is to help Dig Deep accelerate access to clean water, safe toilets, and good hygiene. This can save lives, improve education, empower women and girls, and strengthen livelihoods in these communities.
Aarohi has set a fundraising target of £2,990, with 50% directly supporting Dig Deep’s vital work and the other 50% covering her expedition costs (excluding flights and other travel costs, which she is funding herself).
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a massive feat, and Aarohi credits Hastings District Flying Club for developing her resilience during her flight training. This is a key strength she will be drawing upon during her challenge.
