Watching her with her team is a beautiful mix of kindness and leadership - striving to achieve the best possible result while ensuring the staff are supported.” - Emma
Nkala Saunders, affectionately known as Nik, the Centre Manager at TG's Child Care Armidale, has recently been nominated as an Outstanding Young Leader in the New England Business Awards. This nomination is a testament to her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to early childhood education, where she has significantly contributed to the growth and success of TG's Child Care.
At the helm of TG's Child Care Armidale, Nkala has been instrumental in shaping a learning environment that places children at the centre of a holistic and inclusive educational approach. Her leadership philosophy is rooted in TG's philosophy of Playing is Learning for Life, which she has seamlessly integrated into the curriculum. Nkala ensures that every child’s development is nurtured through innovative and engaging educational industry, earning an ‘Exceeding’ rating from ACECQA.
Bringing the community together
Community engagement is another cornerstone of Nkala's leadership. She has taken a proactive approach to strengthening the connection between TG's Child Care and the local community. Through her organisation of events like the Autumn Festival, parenting workshops, and educational seminars, Nkala has built strong ties with local families and businesses. These initiatives not only provide valuable resources and support to families but also contribute to the vitality of the local community.

Commitment to Sustainability
Nkala’s commitment to sustainability is evident in her efforts to integrate eco-friendly practices into the centre's operations. She has championed initiatives such as community clean-up days and farm-to-fork projects that engage children and families in environmental stewardship. Her leadership in implementing the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) has also enriched the curriculum with cultural inclusiveness, promoting a deeper understanding and respect for Australia's First Nations people.
Nkala plans to deepen the integration of eco-friendly practices and further embed reconciliation into the curriculum. By engaging children and families in sustainability projects, she aims to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship that will benefit the community for years to come.
Overcoming challenges
The nomination for Outstanding Young Leader is particularly significant given the challenges Nkala has navigated over the past year. The ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing shortages, and evolving regulatory requirements have posed considerable hurdles. Yet, Nkala has met these challenges with resilience and innovation, ensuring that TG’s Child Care Armidale not only maintained its high standards but also continued to thrive.
Nkala's proactive approach to leadership has been pivotal in overcoming these challenges. She introduced stringent safety measures and developed policies to manage emergencies and infectious diseases, ensuring the well-being of children, families, and staff. Her strategic thinking also led to the introduction of a four-day workweek and child care services for Educators' children, helping to retain staff and attract new talent during a time of industry-wide shortages.
TG's Child Care Armidale is a Breast Feeding Friendly Service. Nik and Inclusion Officer Lilly attended a Breast Feeding Conference with Munch and Move SWS officers Katrine and Kayla.
The webinar touched base on being a ‘Breast Feeding Friendly Service’ and what steps to take to improve practices at TG's.
Looking to the future, Nkala is focused on expanding the centre's capacity to meet the growing demand for high-quality child care services in the region. This includes plans to open additional campuses, such as the new Kirkwood Street location in Armidale, which will offer 75 places. Nkala is also committed to enhancing the educational quality at TG's by incorporating cutting-edge methodologies and expanding professional development for Educators.
