Growing up, I never imagined that my life would take the twists and turns it has. From a young age, I grappled with health issues that seemed insurmountable. Endometriosis, a silent yet debilitating condition, became my constant companion, casting a shadow over my dreams and aspirations.

Despite the physical pain, it was the silent battles with mental health that proved to be the most challenging. Depression became part of me wearing a fake smile, lurking in the corners of my mind, threatening to engulf me in darkness. Yet, through it all, there was a glimmer of hope – a resilience that refused to be extinguished. Amidst these challenges, I was also grappling with the realisation I had a prescription drug addiction and had the daunting task of weaning off years of heavy prescription pain pills, adding another layer of complexity to my journey towards wellness.

It was during the darkest moments of my journey that I discovered the transformative power of community and connection. In the depths of despair, I found solace in reaching out to others, in sharing my struggles and fears. And in doing so, I discovered that I was not alone – that there were countless others fighting similar battles, silently battling with the shame and stigma of mental health.

Be inspired by Ellen's journey

Birth of Port Macquarie EaTs

Fuelled by this newfound sense of purpose, I embarked on a mission to not only heal myself but to uplift those around me “I need a distraction”. During COVID when the world was crazy was when the journey of Port Macquarie EaTs began – a humble initiative born from the desire to help support local businesses during the challenging times of the pandemic.

My motto is "Happiness isn't about what we get, but what we give. It's in the giving that we truly find joy."

As I poured my heart and soul into nurturing Port Macquarie EaTs, I found that the act of helping others became a source of healing for my own struggles. It was a reminder that amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there is always beauty to be found – in the simple acts of kindness.

Finding the sparkle again

When I had this breakdown late last year, I felt shame that it had returned, believing I had shattered my goals and failed in something profoundly significant, which weighed heavily on me, even affecting my relationships with those around me. I needed a sense of purpose, and as I contemplated entering 2024, I realised I had no goals other than survive, it was official “I burnt out” or in Ellen’s terms “I lost my sparkle”.

Burnout feels like being trapped in a relentless storm of exhaustion and disillusionment, where every step forward is met with resistance and every glimmer of hope is shrouded in darkness. It's losing my sparkle and the vibrant colours that once painted my life, replaced instead by a monochrome existence of fatigue and apathy. Instead, I decided to approach the year with a clear intent: to prioritise personal growth and wellness, focusing on becoming the best version of myself.

Nourishing minds and uniting hearts

And so I remembered the seed that started Port Macquarie EaTs, and so the vision for the EaTs Soul Savour Festival began to take shape at the start of the year. It wasn't just about showcasing local talent or indulging in delicious food – although those were certainly integral parts of the experience last year. It was about creating a space where individuals from all walks of life could come together to nourish their minds and unite their hearts.
