Breast Cancer Awareness Month: No one should face breast cancer alone

Updated: 2 days ago

✦ With 2.3 million new cases every year, breast cancer is the most common cancer globally.

Breast cancer affects both men and women, with one in eight cancer cases in both sexes. In settings where there are health system barriers and a lack of awareness and knowledge, cases are detected late, leading to poor outcomes.

It is imperative to continue to promote advocacy, awareness and behaviour change communication on breast cancer. Increasingly, we are seeing more platforms coming up for knowledge exchange, collaboration and action to provide support for those managing and recovering from the disease as well as their families and caregivers.

"The World Health Organization’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), established in 2021, brings together stakeholders from around the world and across sectors with the shared goal of reducing breast cancer by 2.5% per year, which over a 20-year period would save 2.5 million lives." - Source: WHO

Lens of Hope

When one gets a breast cancer diagnosis, the early days can be overwhelming. Fear and uncertainty become a constant. Sandy Brandon shares her personal journey of separation, loss and being diagnosed with breast cancer, which led her to create Lens of Hope.

Her love for photography and sharing of hope gave rise to the creation of 30 beautiful affirmation cards specially designed for those newly diagnosed with breast cancer, offering a gentle reminder of strength, hope and resilience. Each card features a unique, original photography by Sandy and a carefully chosen affirmation.

"I found when going through my own journey with breast cancer, friends would bring me small gifts like candles, angels, magazines. It brought me comfort knowing someone cared. I also found sometimes friends did not know what to say, and it was people I didn't know very well that came to help and support me. These cards are my way of giving back and hopefully supporting those ladies when they wake up at 3am and feel very alone." - Sandy Brandon

Role of Pilates in recovery

Pilates is a holistic exercise method focusing on core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. It’s particularly beneficial for breast cancer recovery for several reasons:

Improving Mobility

Pilates exercises are designed to gently stretch and strengthen muscles, which can help in regaining the range of motion lost after surgery.

Enhancing Strength

Targeted Pilates routines can rebuild strength in the upper body, essential for daily activities and overall physical health.

Promoting Emotional Wellbeing

The mindful nature of Pilates can reduce stress and improve mental health, fostering a sense of empowerment and control.
