  • Take it outside – why it’s so important to get up, get outdoors and get moving!

✦ The benefits of exercise and its correlation to a healthy lifestyle are well documented. Keep fit, stay active and you are well on the way to a better version of yourself. Exercising helps you stay fit, keeps the weight off, can help fight against disease and boosts mental health. However, despite these facts being universal knowledge, we now live in a time where there are a myriad of alternatives that frequently don’t provide a healthier option. Time spent in front of the TV, playing games consoles or on phones and tablets has increased dramatically in recent years, particularly amongst the younger generation. Whereas parents used to order restless children to head outside to play, now it is widely common for an iPad or games console to be thrust in front of children in order to keep them occupied and quiet. Those over the age of 40 will remember their parents having to yell for them to come in each evening whereas nowadays it is often the reverse, with parents having to encourage kids to go outside! A recent study by the University of Georgia published in Science Daily suggests that 75% of teenagers are not getting enough exercise. Now that may be only a cross section and thus somewhat unreliable to read as a common or consistent barometer but it still provides a worrying insight into the lack of activity among our young. The World Health Organization offers a more holistic insight into things, stating “more than a quarter of the world’s adult population (1.4 billion adults) are insufficiently active.” The same organisation has an age-based breakdown pertaining to the recommended amount and frequency of exercise that should be taken. Those in the 5-17-year-old bracket “should do at least an average of 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity, mostly aerobic, physical activity, across the week... at least 3 days a week... [and] should limit the amount of time spent being sedentary, particularly the amount of recreational screen time.” Our increasingly sedentary lifestyles pose a threat to children’s health, which can lead to increased adiposity (weight gain), poorer cardiometabolic health, fitness, behavioural conduct/pro-social behaviour and reduced sleep duration. Many outdoor activities bring many benefits National Play Outside Day Acknowledging this is an increasing threat, a small collective of parents in Colorado launched “ National Play Outside Day ” back in April 2011 with the simple objective of getting their children to do exactly that. Whereas it is still very much a US-centric phenomena, it has grown in popularity and is now gaining traction all over the world with the first Saturday of each month designated a play outside day. Australia is renowned for its outdoor lifestyle options and penchance for sports but that shouldn’t necessarily fool people into thinking all Aussies are active. Indeed, former Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt recently highlighted The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Survey from 2017–18 revealed that 67% of Australian adults were overweight or obese (12.5 million people), an increase from 63.4% since 2014-15. If the current trend continues, more than 18 million Australians will be overweight or obese by 2030. Furthermore, a report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare stated that “in 2017–18, around 1 in 4 (24%) children aged 5–14 were overweight (17%) or obese (7.7%).” It is a trend that is predicted to increase which emphasises the importance of initiatives such as play outside day even more. Locally, of course, we have the brilliant TG’s Child Care where “Playing is Learning for Life” is their mantra. TG’s offer Preschool and Long Day Care services for children from 6 weeks to 6 years across five centres in NSW and one in QLD. They are one big happy family led by a team of educators who place huge emphasis on children becoming the very best versions of themselves. Outdoor play is a significant factor at TG’s Child Care where the youngsters are always up for a game, especially if it involves running, jumping, tunnelling, crawling and rolling! TG’s beautiful award-winning gardens have been specially designed to be natural, nurturing, safe and secure spaces for children to play, live and learn. These exciting and dynamic spaces are where children can explore and develop their fine and gross motor skills, build curiosity, social and emotional intelligence, engage in active and passive play. Fun and imagination are key drivers at TG’s where you’ll often see youngsters jumping into an old boat to have an adventure on the high seas with their gang of pirates, getting down close to the ground to hunt for little bugs and to see what they’re up to. If it's a warm day out there’s water play waiting where it's easy for children to pretend they’re having a nice day at the beach. The imagination of a child knows no limits, and it is not limited by their geographical space. Getting children out and about to explore firsthand is also a key component of TG’s teaching style. At TG's Urangan, for instance, their Reconciliation Action Plan involves going on a beach kindy every fortnight, something that the children really look forward to. Getting out into nature and just smelling the sea, feeling the soft warm sand sink below their feet... it's an environment absolutely primed for learning. For TG's Child Care, exploration outside is so much fun You can show a child a picture of a beach and illustrations of corals and they may well forget it soon enough. Take them out to a real beach and have them actually notice dried up corals and letting them touch it and feel the texture, the roughness, the little holes in them and how light or heavy they are... and the children will be so fascinated they’ll be talking about it for hours and days after. Very often, families learn about what the children have been doing at TG’s from the children themselves! They are so excited about what they have learnt they can't wait to go back and share it with their families! “Did you know that...?” is a common thing to hear at the dinner table after a day of Playing is Learning for Life at TG’s! Similarly, Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to make time outdoors part of every child’s day. Currently two days are designated each year where teachers take children outdoors to play and learn, although this is something that campaigners are hoping will increase in due course. Over 3 million students got involved in 2019. Their website spells out quite clearly their objectives and the value of outdoor play. “We want to make people understand that spending time outdoors is as important for children’s development as learning to read and write. We want to show how learning outside of the classroom engages and excites children in spectacular ways. We want everyone to understand that outdoor play is the key to improving children’s health, wellbeing and happiness. We want to make it clear that outdoor play is not a ‘nice to have’, it is essential for children’s development.” The importance out engaging in outdoor activities and play is vitally important to all of us and certainly not something just restricted to children. We all need to make more time and more of a conscious effort to get up off our butts, turn off the TV, put down the tablet or phone and get into the great outdoors. Whether its more strenuous activities such as running, crossfit, swimming, yoga or cycling or more leisurely pursuits such as meditation or a nice long walk along the beach, the benefits are significant and should not be overlooked. Whereas it is easy to blame technology trapping us into more sedentary lifestyles, we can also use it to our advantage with products such as Fitbit and an extenisve range of easily accessible and usable apps making it easy to track our activity, lifestyle habits, even quality of sleep. There’s really no excuse, so what are you waiting for? This article is finished now so time to get up, get outside and get moving! • Celebrating the joy of diversity on Harmony Day

✦ When it comes to authentic connection across cultures, not even language can get in the way! We are proud to say that Harmony Day, celebrated worldwide now on 21st March, actually originated in Australia in 1999 to celebrate unity and diversity. It coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination , an urgent reminder of the need to eliminate racism and racial discrimination. A land of diversity Australia stands out as a nation made up of a rich diversity of cultures. The world's oldest continuing culture is right here, where our First Nations people have been caring for the country for more than 60,000 years and contributing to our sense of national identity. It is their cultures and histories that are the foundation of multiculturalism in Australia. "50 years ago, multiculturalism became official Australian government policy, with the goal of making this a land of equal opportunity for all people, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, race, or national or ethnic origin." - Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs in his Harmony Day 2024 message Australia's multiculturalism policy continues to build toward this ideal today. It is worth mentioning that this year is when Australia celebrates 75 years of Australian citizenship. Since 1949, Australia has welcomed more than six million new citizens , and now more than half of all Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was. Harmony Day in Port Macquarie According to Britannica , the population of Australia consists of more than 270 ethnic groups. In Port Macquarie, we celebrated Harmony Day with a Harmony Lunch where each person brought food from their country. Gastronomy is a universal love language and speaks to one of our most basic and essential needs. The sharing of meals has always been one of the most powerful ways to connect with one another, and it's amazing how people from different walks of life come together through food. We're so proud of all the cultures we've brought together in Port Macquarie! At Brilliant-Online's 3rd birthday bash this year on board Port AdVenture Cruises ' the Rhythmboat, we brought together businesses, friends and family from all walks of life to celebrate! Read about it here . Lost in translation... or not! Ray is an 85-year-old Australian who has a beautiful story to share. He met Michiko, a 61-year-old Japanese lady through her daughter Erica, who was working on a farm next to where Ray lives. Neither could speak each other's language and while there's Google Translate to help with the conversation, it also brought about some unexpected misunderstandings! Perhaps this is where gestures and body language help to smooth out the bumps in the road. Michiko hopes to be able to obtain a visa to stay in Australia for a longer period, because despite being lost in translation, both Ray and Michiko have found happiness through their friendship. Michiko and Ray have found a beautiful friendship in spite of language differences That is just one story out of so many others that have proven that authentic connections can triumph over barriers. With over 55,000 Harmony Day events to date since the beginning of Harmony Day, one could say that more than ever, given the challenges the world has been facing all this time, people are even more aware of the need for harmony, respect and appreciation of the diversity around us. Harmony Day, in essence, is a consciousness we carry with us every day and always. It is in finding comfort in our similarities and inspiring curiosity and appreciation in our differences that allow us all to continue to evolve and lead the way for future generations towards a more peaceful and harmonious environment. • Natasha Barnard-French, PanOptic Vision

Sight and Vision are not the same Seeing clearly depends on eye shape and health but this doesn’t always mean the two eyes work well as a team or the brain processes visual information appropriately. Good vision is an active process. Two sets of muscles control whether you see a single, clear image or a double, blurry one. Every minute your eyes are open, your brain is deciding how much attention to give to central detail compared to peripheral movement. This is task-specific and if it takes too much effort, the brain has no attention left over for more complicated processing. Good vision needed for playing sport is very different to good vision needed for reading. Children with good sight but untreated vision problems can have trouble with their co-ordination playing sport or with their learning abilities in a classroom. Difficulties reading and having a short attention span may also be misconstrued as misbehaviour. Good vision needed for playing sport is very different to good vision needed for reading. "I'm Natasha Barnard-French. As a Developmental and Behavioural Optometrist, I solve eye coordination function problems, treat a child’s developing skills of vision perception. For adults, I assess and manage visual issues associated with health, and neurological conditions, such as stroke and head injury, Parkinson’s disease, concussion and whiplash. These skills and treatment options mean that even if a patient doesn’t have a complex vision problem, I can provide the very best visual treatment for them. I often get told that I have solved a problem the patient didn’t even realise was related to their vision!" Natasha's job is to analyse visual systems and design a plan to help people make changes that can lead to improved visual performance or help adapt the visual system to what each person needs. Natasha Barnard-French is a Behavioural Optometrist Training to See Deeply After completing her Optometry Degree with Honours from UNSW in 1993, Natasha went on to complete a research Masters in the neuroscience of vision development and specific learning disorders including dyslexia. In 2000 she was awarded a Fellowship from ACBO (Australasian College of Behavioural Optometry), the highest award offered by the organisation. She was also a founding member of a well-established aid organisation called Equal Health, and has travelled to India and Zimbabwe providing vision care to remote communities. Having a special interest in children’s vision, Natasha made a trip across the Nullabor to Perth where she worked in specialty behavioural optometry and vision therapy practices for 10 years. She is passionate about ensuring that appropriate vision solutions, including vision therapy, are available to children. This can help address any vision related learning difficulties they may have. Sometimes, a child's inability to concentrate for a sustained period or a lack of interest in something can be misunderstood as ´bad behaviour´. Some children exhibit difficulty in keeping up with their peers in school and if given the wrong diagnosis, not only does the issue not get resolved, the children also receive the added stress of an inappropriate solution. Their difficulties could be related to a problem with their vision system and when children´s problems are diagnosed correctly, they can receive the appropriate solution and be free to enjoy their lives. A Change of Scenery In 2009, Natasha moved from Perth, Western Australia to Laurieton in New South Wales. She had gone there on a visit to her parents who had made the Camden Haven home. This led to an unexpected decision which ended in a happy move to the area. She decided to take the bold step to establish vision therapy services in Laurieton and Lighthouse Plaza. 2015 was when Natasha established her very own Optometry practice at the Lake Cathie Health Complex where she offers the full range of optometry services for all ages. Looking Back to the Past Wagga was where Natasha grew up and she often looks back to her childhood days of long trips up the Hume Highway to Camden Haven during summer. She has joyful memories of spending time at a real beach and feeling the sun above and the sand below her and the blue of the water all around. Looking Ahead into the Future Behavioural optometry is infinite in what it can offer and Natasha never stops being curious about the study of vision development. She is now looking at researching the specific visual/auditory processes behind learning to read English and learning to read music. Engaging all the Senses Prior to Covid, Natasha had been very involved with the regional music community. She is an accomplished pianist and flautist. Natasha enjoys playing flute with Sinfonia MNC, as well as engagements with the Players Theatre Productions and Glasshouse lunchtime concerts. Musicality runs in the family, and her daughter Abi is a violinist! Natasha is happy to be kept busy accompanying her daughter on the piano and ferrying her to and from her violin lessons! Watch an interview with Natasha Barnard-French, Family and Behavioural Optometrist, together with Julie Currie, Vision Therapist of Panoptic Vision: Seeing the Big Picture Our eyes are precious orbs that affect many areas of our lives. Panoptic Vision , set up since 2015 , is proud to be independent and locally owned, providing highly skilled, good quality optometry services to the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Looking at the root of the word, "panoptic" in Greek means "seeing the whole". Panoptic Vision does precisely that. We assist in understanding and attaining the best holistic vision outcomes for whatever patients consider important for quality of life. Panoptic Vision is committed to providing vision solutions that go beyond. It is not just about solving a vision problem. It goes beyond - the focus is also to enhance visual performance and/or provide preventive options. Looking into the future also means continually investing in and making available state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to discover early signs of disease and provide the highest quality of eye care to the community. What many may not know is that there is not just one vision system. And people have different vision needs. What makes Panoptic Vision stand out is their thorough examinations and personalised vision solutions to cater to different patient expectations and attend to all aspects of vision needs. Patients are given time to understand their condition and the potential range of options. This allows patients to choose what works best for them and their budget. It is actually critically important to spend time understanding how patients use their vision system to identify accurately the right optical solution. Testing a patient's sight is not only for optical correction. The process is far more complex and includes exploring the whole vision system. It is Panoptic Vision's commitment to excellence in delivering quality patient care that brings about trust from patients. When one is leaving one´s precious pair of eyes in the care of a qualified professional, Panoptic Vision wants to make sure that patients feel confident in what they have to offer. Panoptic Vision’s treatment options include: Ocular health management including referral to medical care as required Spectacles and vision therapy Full scope Behavioural Optometry Vision Therapy programs to assist children’s vision development (turned/lazy eyes and/or vision processing for learning) Vision Therapy for adults requiring visual neuro-rehabilitation (most commonly after stroke or after head injury) All optometry appointments attract a Medicare rebate and Panoptic Vision can process maximum rebates from all health funds for spectacles and contact lenses. • Admittedly a 'Jill of all trades' Elsa Barbosa loves her vocation

✦ Cruising the Hastings River on a daily basis dolphin spotting is a tough gig - not! That’s just what Elsa does as co-owner and manager of Port AdVenture Cruises , a charter boat operation based in Port Macquarie. Offering a huge range of cruises, including private functions and a huge selection of entertainment events throughout the year, we asked Elsa just what she does aboard the boat? “The question should be, what don’t I do?" she laughed. "As the co-owner I have a very hands-on role including taking the bookings, overseeing the catering, promotion and marketing and, when we finish our cruises, cleaning and servicing the vessel." Elsa: co-owner and manager of Port AdVenture Cruises A wonderful cruising experience for everyone, the vessel has a fantastic reputation for their Seniors' Big Day Out Cruises , hosting private groups celebrating a birthday for 1year olds to 90 year olds and they have provided uni cruises with DJs suitable for the crowd on board. “In summary, we provide weddings, parties and anything," Elsa told us "The big difference and point of sale is that our venue (boat) cruises the river with changing scenery every five minutes.” Challenges faced as a Woman Business Owner If we had asked Elsa this 10 years ago she may have answered differently, but now she said that it seems women are accepted and respected as business leaders. “My co-owner, David Lazarus, is a male," she explained. "We make the decisions together and, while we don’t always agree, we have both learned to be flexible and consider each other’s opinions. It’s an old cliche but 'there is no I in team'.” Elsa has a strong work ethic. If she gets a work related phone call at 10pm she will answer it. “Being in business you must be prepared for 100% commitment and you must love your job. To be cruising the Hastings River every day, almost always seeing dolphins and getting warm feedback from our customers is very special for me.” Innovation and change When Port AdVenture Cruises went through COVID, like many business owners, Elsa and David had lots of time to think and restructure. They didn’t waste an hour during the lockdown, they planned for the future of their business. “There was immense financial pressure at the time, however, we knew we had a business that would prosper and COVID, while at the time was devastating, has made me more determined to be successful in the future of our business,” Elsa told us. Elsa listens to people and asks lots of questions. She surrounds herself with positive people who inspire and advise her to do things better. Recently, she nominated herself to be on the Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association Board and was over the moon when she was accepted. “While it is important that our business succeeds, it is vital that the Port Macquarie region continues to thrive,” she said. Port AdVenture Cruises have furthered their business by seeking advice from technology professionals and have been set up expertly with their social media channels and a website update. Elsa believes that all businesses need to work on this aspect of their business, harness modern technology to reach out to clients and customers. Book Cruises Protect our Earth and make it a better place Elsa has strong opinions on this. “You can’t sugar coat it. Earth and some of the people at the moment need to change their attitude. The current war in Ukraine, the constant threat of terrorism and even the scammers who hack your social media make our time on Earth at present very challenging. If we can get rid of crime, drugs, war, etc, our planet Earth would be a better place.” Dolphins welcome! She thinks all businesses, including Port AdVenture Cruises realise that they have to protect the environment. “We are proactive with recycling and try to minimise our rubbish. We are grateful that we have a clean river system with clean water. As a business owner, I take the environment very seriously and ensure we do our bit to protect it as best we can,” she told us. A word of thanks from Elsa “I really appreciate Brilliant-online , firstly for giving our business a continuing high profile on their multimedia platform and in their monthly magazine, and secondly me as a co-owner of Port AdVenture Cruises , a voice to be interviewed for this edition,” she said. “I have only been in Port Macquarie for five years, but the community support has been overwhelming - Port Macquarie is my HOME.” Elsa’s one wish for 2023… that the bushfires, floods, COVID and the recent winds are all behind us and that we can trade without the disruption of these natural disasters Contact : Elsa Barbosa & David Lazarus Port AdVenture Cruises Website: https://cruiseportmacquarie.com.au/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Portadventurecruises/ t/ 0417 681 031 or 0434 393 199 Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • What makes Educators stay so long at TG's Child Care?

✦ Staying for more than a few years in a job is becoming a rarity, and TG's Child Care stands out in having Educators who have passed their ten-year milestone at TG's! According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in a report released on 30th June 2023, there were 13.8 million people employed in February 2023. Over half (56%) had been employed in their current job for less than 5 years. About 1 in 5 (21%) had been in their job for less than 1 year. Statistics from the Economic News Release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics say the breakdown of the median tenure for workers age 25 to 34 is 3.2 years. The median tenure for employees age 65 and over is 10.3 years. Workers in management, professional, and related occupations had the highest median tenure (5.5 years). Workers in service occupations had the lowest median tenure (3.2 years). That means a switch every 3- 5 years is about average now. So why do most Educators in TG’s Child Care stay so long at a job? We celebrate the 10-year milestone of Meg, Mel, Jacqui, Faye, Kiara, Kim and Narelle! They share about the magic TG's has that makes them stay on year after year! TG's Sense of Belonging is what keeps Meg Barnden-Hyde committed to TG's Meg Barnden-Hyde celebrates a whopping 15 years with TG's, and our Brilliant readers will remember from previous articles that she actually started as a parent at TG's, so her trust in TG's extends even beyond her professional career there! Our readers will also recall she won Outstanding Business Leader Award at New England North West Business Awards in 2022 and the Educational Leader Excellence Award at Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) Excellence in Early Childhood Education Awards in 2023. TG's Educators shine at awards! What made me decide to stay through the years, however, was the warmth and sense of belonging  that I experienced from the moment I knocked on Gayle  and Trevor’s  door. • Getting to know Gayle Kee – a child care expert who really does care...

✦ And plays to learn for life The care, stewardship and development of our young ones is critical, something TG’s Child Care has excelled in since 2002 by providing a safe, fun, engaging environment for children. Driven by their mantra “Playing is Learning for Life”, their trusted and respected reputation has been built with purpose, expertise and care. And it shows. As their website states, “Families say TG’s Child Care just feels right.” Most readers will be more than aware of TG’s Child Care , either from having their own youngsters attend one of the six centres regionally or through knowing someone who has been there, maybe even knowing one of the fabulous individuals that work there. Gayle Kee, TG's Child Care However, we wanted to get to know a little more about the lady that conceptualised and grew the business to what it is today, to find out what makes her tick and what it takes to run such a successful enterprise. Talk to Gayle Kee for less than a minute and it is evidently clear that she is a lady of conviction that truly cares about what she does. As in truly cares! Child care isn’t just a job for Gayle, it is a way of life, early childhood education is a passion that she has honed and provided to countless grateful families over the years. She takes immense pride in providing a secure environment that can help children grow naturally, that can aid their development and allow them to really be themselves. These notions of love, care and development were ingrained in her from an early age, growing up with two younger sisters in rural Victoria with both parents in the teaching profession. Regular, long family holidays would allow the young Gayle to see and learn new things, to encounter fresh environments, situations, people and ways of thinking. This was evident when, during the final two years of her primary schooling, her parents took up teaching positions on an aboriginal settlement in Papunya in the Northern Territory. It proved a real eye opener and key event for Gayle. “This was one of the most significant events of my early years, learning about a very different culture and living in a very different and beautiful part of Australia,” she says. “It also significantly shaped me with my learning and understanding around other cultures and the importance of inclusivity, ensuring everyone is included and respected and has a sense of belonging.” Underdog advocate She admits that from a very early age she was a strong advocate of the underdog, of wanting to always protect those that were struggling, being teased, bullied or marginalised in anyway. “If teachers would pour scorn on or belittle any of my classmates I would instinctively take their side,” she says. “I guess I have always felt a very natural tendency to provide care and support to those vulnerable or struggling in some capacity. I’m a huge advocate of inclusivity and do not like to see people left out.” Gayle’s mother was a kindergarten teacher and Gayle would often spend time at her mother’s school, watching how she helped her pupils. This helped develop an awareness of how important a role teaching and education can play in developing a child into the best version of themselves that in turn fuelled her desire to want to pursue it as a career. She later enrolled in a teacher’s training course for early childhood development in Melbourne and took her first job at a preschool in Churchill. Trevor and Gayle Kee, TG's Child Care Gayle and Trevor met in High School and were childhood sweethearts. Trevor would, in time, become her husband, best friend, biggest influence and business partner. Trevor specialised in landscaping and, once the opportunity arose to help develop a childcare centre on the Sunshine Coast, the couple took the plunge. It was a daunting challenge and a very steep learning curve says Gayle, but one that her and Trevor were well suited to as their combined expertise proved a perfect match. After developing two childcare centres locally, it dawned on the couple that they wanted to establish their own centre. One day Trevor called his wife to say he had instinctively bought an old cottage in Wauchope which would be the perfect location for their first official childcare centre venture together and off they went! By 2007 childcare centres had become very “en vogue”, with huge interest and demands. Almost inevitably, Gayle and Trevor were approached to sell their Wauchope business that they had built up - not an easy decision but one they decided to do. However, almost immediately they both regretted it. “It felt like a loss of identity of sorts,” reflects Gayle. “There was a definite sense of loss, it was very peculiar. I would be around town and people would regularly comment that the centre was no longer the same, that standards had dropped. It even got to a point where I couldn’t even drive past our old centre for the fear of regret and sadness it evoked.” Back on the horse! It wasn’t long before Gayle and Trevor were looking for a new location to allow them to establish their next, new childcare centre. This took them inland to the town of Uralla where they bought the old school master’s residence in 2008, and purpose-built a new centre on the large block. Trevor’s sharp eye and expertise in landscaping ensured the outdoor environment and playspaces were in top shape in no time and Gayle brought her experience in building the culture and developing the actual care and education facilities for the children which saw prompt and steady enrolments. Stepping back momentarily to when Gayle and Trevor still owned the facility in Wauchope, they had attended a seminar in Hawaii on operating and managing multi-centre services. They were there holidaying and attended out of curiosity but never thought for one moment they would expand beyond the solitary centre. Running one was challenging enough, they told themselves. Fast forward to 2009, however, and an opportunity arose in Armidale to take on a centre that had, admittedly, seen better days. “It was very run down, a premises that had been operational for over 15 years but had been clearly neglected,” Gayle remembers. “Safety was clearly the number one priority at that time as the facilities were threadbare to put it mildly – there was only one sandpit, one climbing frame, the entire outdoor area a synthetic surface virtually completely devoid of gardens with plants or any greenery. It was really very sad and you could see the effect it had on the children and their behaviour as the lack of smiley faces or happiness attested to.” Whether it was the lessons learned from the Hawaii seminar, Gayle’s penchance for helping the underdog or the couple’s drive to take on new challenges and opportunities, they decided to acquire the business and immediately set about reinvigorating it. “We pulled the entire outside environment apart,” recalls Gayle. “Trevor worked his magic and in no time we had different levels, gardens, greenery, more playspaces and facilities. It was a total transformation.” What was more pleasing was the transformational effect it had on the children’s behaviour who attended the centre. “Within six months the change in the children was clear to see,” beams Gayle, proudly. “It was incredibly satisfying to see them smiling, running around and playing, happy and confident and above all else having fun with exciting new challenges, because that’s what it is all about at that age. Seeing a smile on a child’s face is one of the things in life that inspires me most.” The values of care, love, compassion, respect, trust and fun are the bedrock that Gayle and Trevor have built their business on, fundamental to their success and growth. Constantly encouraging others to develop, providing the right environment and culture for everyone to identify and understand their skillset, gifts and superpowers has seen the business blossom, something that applies to the staff as well and children. This is the TG's Way. “We are completely invested in the business and staff, offering continual improvement opportunities,” comments Gayle. “Everyone who walks through the door at our child care centres must be made to feel welcomed and valued and that they belong. It is all about how we make people feel.” Inimitable caring touch In 2012 the opportunity arose to return to Wauchope and build and open a centre in the middle of the CBD. Before the building and refurbishment work was complete, the enrolment numbers had hit their maximum. Shortly after, a second centre was established in Wauchope and in 2016 they purchased their third centre in that area. The sixth and most recent centre is in Urangan in Hervey Bay, a 75 place facility that was 25 years old and had been rundown and neglected but which has now been renovated and rejuvenated and is flourishing with the inimitable caring touch from Gayle and Trevor. “We have learnt that the secret to our success lies in getting the environment right, and the culture right and that’s when the magic happens.” TG's Team, Urangan When asked how the COVID-19 pandemic affected them and their business, Gayle responded that it actually has been a positive. “Not diminishing the awful impact COVID-19 has had locally, nationally or around the world, but for us it only improved things,” she says. “Initially it impacted enrolment numbers and there were a few times where we had to close certain facilities, mainly due to many educator going into self-isolation, but they were few and far between. Overall it actually brought us all closer together; the teams bonded more and we saw more attention being afforded to issues like mental health and mindfulness training. “Trevor and I have been stuck in Queensland for much of the last two years, mainly due to lockdowns and the restrictions on interstate travel but what was great to see was how each of the centres in all locations continued to thrive and run themselves efficiently. Everyone within the team was empowered and really stepped up. “Even so far as the children at the centres themselves we have seen positives, especially in regards to awareness and application of health and safety and hygiene rules. Many of the children are constantly reminding each other how important it is to thoroughly wash your hands and maintain good hygiene!” TG’s is clearly built on sound foundations and values that have fostered a community akin to one big happy family, with everyone contributing and worth their weight in gold. It therefore almost feels like a redundant question to ask what the future holds. “We are so committed to this business and everyone involved in it, so committed to the communities we serve that we just plan to carry on,” says Gayle. “We could quite easily sell up and retire but that doesn’t appeal at all. Plus, we tried selling up once before and didn’t like the outcome,” she reminds me with a smile! The sky is the limit! Considering how busy Gayle and Trevor are with their burgeoning business I am somewhat surprised when I tentatively ask what she does to relax in the way of hobbies. “We love to fly,” she replies! “I am always looking to improve, to develop myself and so one day made it a goal to learn how to fly an ultra light plane. Flying out over the likes of Fraser Island, looking down at the beauty below, seeing whales in the ocean – it’s just incredible!” Gayle and Trevor even had some of the pictures they took from the skies published in a nature-themed magazine, adding a further string to their already very impressive bow! Gayle and Trevor Kee with their Vixxen For someone who has inspired so many others, I decide to ask Gayle what inspires her most of all. “Seeing the smile on a child’s face,” she responds without hesitation, alluding to her earlier point. “Seeing the significant difference our centres can have on a child, building trust, watching them grow with confidence and learning new skills - these are all the things I cherish about my work.” Another key driver for Gayle is to make people more accountable for their behaviour and actions and to question their lack of empathy and compassion to their fellow mankind. Teaching the benefits of critical thinking is something Gayle holds in high regard, name-checking the likes of renowned Maltese physician Edward de Bono and American horse trainer Monty Roberts. This is something that makes perfect sense when I ask her what advice she may have for others, be it in regard to building a successful business or just in general life. “Always be prepared to adopt a different perspective, to look at things with a different lens. Explore as much as you can and constantly be looking to improve yourself. Never make assumptions and always, always check the facts. How can I do better and work towards building a culture of kindness? Every single situation in life is an opportunity to grow, learn and shine.” Wise words indeed. The culture in any organisation comes from the top and Gayle Kee has established a best-in-class approach in all of her centres. If you needed any further proof that your children are in safe hands when enrolled at TG’s you now have it. After all, the secret is in the name itself: TG (Trevor and Gayle) Child Care. All about Accomplished Tree Management At Accomplished Tree Management, everything they do connects people to nature. Each garden and location they service is important to them because trees and their culture is their passion. Based in Port Macquarie and servicing the Mid North Coast, Accomplished Tree Management is a professional, family owned arboricultural company since 2008. Over time, they have earned a reputation for excellent customer service, quality workmanship and advice. They provide a variety of services ranging from tree removals, pruning to deadwooding, stump grinding as well as preparing arboricultural reports and hazard assessments. All in Order You know how professional and serious a company is when they make sure they have everything in order. The work of an arborist is not for the faint of heart. It's not about bringing an axe, going into someone's garden and hacking off some poor unfortunate tree that isn't looking too sightly. Like any other profession, being an arborist requires proper training and education, and work experience gained over time makes a big difference to how well they can assess what a tree needs and to offer the best solution to the client. Safety An arborist's work can be dangerous, which is why Safety First is key at Accomplished Tree Management. Safe work methods are of the utmost importance - this means that Hazard Identification checklists are completed prior to commencement of any job by their qualified staff to ensure optimal safety. QTRA Registered Accomplished Tree Management is also fully qualified and adheres to the Australian standards of AS 4373-2007-Pruning of Amenity Trees and a registered user of the Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) method . As Rhys, owner of Accomplished Tree Management, explains, the QTRA is a qualification for quantifying risk for owners/managers of trees within locations such as schools, daycare centres, businesses, public lands and residential locations alike whilst assisting in the allocation of budget by applying straightforward mathematical equations. The QTRA system quantifies the risk of significant harm from tree failure in a way that enables tree managers to balance safety with tree values and operate to predetermined limits of tolerable or acceptable risk. What this means is, by quantifying the risk from tree failure as a probability, the QTRA method enables a tree owner or manager to manage the risk in accordance with widely applied and internationally recognised levels of risk tolerance. It provides a decision-making framework which considers the balance between the benefits provided by trees, levels of risk they pose, and costs of risk management. Qualifications These are Accomplished Tree Management´s qualifications at a glance: - AQF 2 Arboriculture - AQF 3 Arboriculture - AQF 5 Arboriculture - All their pruning and climbing techniques are AS 4373-2007 Pruning of Amenity Trees compliant. - Reports on development sites are compliant with Australian Standard AS4970-2009 (Protection of Trees on Development Sites) - Registered user of Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) Method Insurance The company is fully insured with $20 million Public Liability and $5 million Professional Indemnity Insurance. An Ethical Tree Service Company How does one look after trees and greenery within a city landscape? It is not about forcing trees and greenery into the urban infrastructure, nor is it about removing a tree on a whim just because it is in our way - it is about blending the urban and the natural so that trees can thrive, are well looked after, and humans and the urban structures around can coexist in harmony with Mother Nature. What makes Accomplished Tree Management stand out is their genuine passion and respect for Nature . Trees and nature are not secondary in an urban landscape. If anything, trees are well protected in Australia, even by the law. A professional arborist will know the legal requirements and regulations for both removing a tree or having a tree on a location. Knowing what is allowed or not can save the owner unnecessary heartache. Accomplished Tree Management is on hand to advise property owners about the necessary legal requirements related to trees so they do not end up with a nasty nightmare on their hands. Providing relevant advice is part of the company´s high quality service. They do not see their work as a 9-to-5 job where they only do what is strictly needed and then pack their bags and go. Every job for them is done with respect, care and genuine concern for the greenery as well as being able to see and understand what clients need. And this even includes making sure they leave the area clean and tidy when their job is done. One could say that the team at Accomplished Tree Management treats every garden and location as if it were their own. Trees are so much a part of our urban landscape we do not stop to wonder how magnificent and mysterious they really are. Many of us may not know much about trees beyond what we remember from secondary school science lessons. A tree is much more than a crown, a trunk and roots. We are very much in awe of what Accomplished Tree Management does and how they are able to understand trees and what they need. One could even say they are like Tree Whisperers and can understand the language of trees ! The next time you walk past a tree, stop and take a really good look at it. You may well notice textures and colours you never saw before. Look up and wonder how an arborist can possibly get all the way up to give the tree a trim for the crown. Or try hugging a tree and you´ll realise how wide its girth is. How does one even begin removing a tree that huge should it get too sick and has to be taken out? And this may just give you a glimpse into the world of an arborist - of the brilliant team at Accomplished Tree Management. A very Brilliant Congratulations to Rhys and his team at Accomplished Tree Management for being awarded the Top Three Tree Services in the region. We are sure the trees who have been cared for by the team are all waving their leaves in a silent applause as well. • Helping koalas adapt to a changing world

✦ Cuddly mascots of the Outback, Australia's koalas are facing a crisis. All is not lost yet as we navigate how to help, given the reminder that September is Save the Koala Month . These adorable creatures, known for their love of eucalyptus leaves and sleepy demeanours, are increasingly under threat . As urbanisation spreads and climate change intensifies, koalas find themselves navigating a rapidly changing world. Thankfully, there are some heartening efforts underway to help them adapt and survive. We take a look at the challenges they face and the innovative solutions people are coming up with to save these iconic animals. Koala Hospital Port Macquarie | Photo: Veronica Lind Urbanisation: when cities meet the bush As Australia's cities and towns expand, koalas are losing more of their natural habitat. Eucalyptus forests, which are essential for koalas, are being cleared to make way for new developments, roads, and infrastructure. This not only reduces the areas where koalas can live and feed but also forces them into closer contact with humans. Imagine a koala wandering into a suburban backyard, looking for food or a new home—it's becoming a more common sight. The problem with this increased interaction is that it brings new dangers. Koalas often have to cross busy roads to move between fragmented patches of forest, leading to many being injured or killed by vehicles. Additionally, domestic dogs pose a significant threat, as many koalas fall victim to dog attacks in urban areas. The result is a growing tension between the need for development and the need to protect these animals. Unexpected challenges of human-koala conflicts When koalas venture into human territory, the risks aren't just from traffic and pets. Disease is another major challenge. Koalas in stressed environments, especially those fragmented by urban development, are more susceptible to diseases like Chlamydia . This disease, common among koala populations, causes blindness, infertility, and even death, further reducing their numbers. But there’s hope. Communities and local councils are starting to pay more attention to these issues. Some areas are now considering koala-safe road signs, speed limits in koala zones, and even building "koala bridges" over highways to help them safely cross. Small steps like these can make a big difference in reducing human-koala conflicts. Conservation Efforts To combat these challenges, conservationists are getting creative. Traditional methods like habitat preservation and tree planting are still crucial. Planting more eucalyptus trees and creating protected reserves can provide koalas with safe spaces to live and thrive. But beyond that, some innovative solutions are emerging. For example, technology is playing a big role in monitoring and protecting koalas. Drones are now being used to track koala populations from the air, giving researchers a bird’s-eye view of their movements and behaviours. There are also efforts to create “ koala corridors ,” which are stretches of land specifically designed to connect isolated habitats, allowing koalas to move freely and safely. Community involvement: the power of people Perhaps one of the most exciting developments in koala conservation is the growing involvement of everyday people. Communities across Australia are stepping up to help, whether by participating in tree-planting events or volunteering at koala rescue centres. Citizen science projects are also becoming popular, where residents can report koala sightings and track their health and behaviour. This grassroots involvement not only helps gather valuable data but also raises awareness and fosters a deeper connection between people and these unique animals. In some cases, communities have even adopted "koala-friendly" policies, like using eco-friendly fencing and planting more native trees in backyards and public spaces. It's a wonderful example of how small, collective actions can contribute to a larger conservation effort. How can I help? Plant eucalypt trees wherever possible. Find a volunteer group in your area that is involved in planting trees. In fact, preserve the trees we already have! Koalas and trees cannot speak for themselves, so we have to be the voice that spreads the awareness to sustain and expand areas of forests. Whenever each tree is removed, especially eucalypts, we are effectively destroying a koala's food and shelter. Research the contact of your local wildlife rescue in case you see a sick or injured koala. Bring up to your local Member of Parliament the concern you have about the future of koalas and their habitats. Live in existing urban environments to reduce the demand for more land. A Future for Koalas Australia has the highest rate of extinction of mammals in the world , believe it or not, and while that is a sobering message, it is also a push to take action so that koalas do not go down that road of extinction. Koalas are undoubtedly facing tough times, and there’s a growing movement to turn the tide. From community-led initiatives to high-tech solutions, efforts to protect and preserve these lovable creatures are gaining momentum. By working together, Australians can help ensure that koalas remain a cherished part of the country's natural heritage, not just for today, but for generations to come. In the end, saving the koalas isn’t just about saving a species—it’s about preserving a symbol of the wild, beautiful, and unique spirit of Australia. So, next time you see a sleepy koala, remember: they’re counting on us to keep their eucalyptus dreams alive. ❋ Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • CREATIVE WAYS TO REPURPOSE FALLEN TREES

Here are a few favourites we picked up from Accomplished Tree Management on how you can repurpose your fallen tree to curate a range of practical, unique and inspiring home and garden solutions. 1. Creating small side tables for multiple use throughout the house is a great way of repurposing the trunk of a tree. These tables can be perfect for a lamp at the bedside, to stand plants or similar decorations on in the lounge or hallway, or to store toiletries in the bathroom. Repurposed wooden side tables 2. Looking to jazz up the wardrobe? Why not create a tree branch hanger for clothes? Similarly you could create a hanger for keys and associated nick-nacks. Adding a lick of paint further enhances the look and integration into your home decor. Repurposed wooden key hangers 3. An especially novel way to use your discarded timber is to create decorative ornaments. Simple, small cut offs can be sanded down, varnished and painted to provide an inspiring range of trinkets, baubles and knickknacks. This is something that is becoming increasingly popular around the festive period where home made decorations are continually taking the place of shop-bought options – it is a much cheaper method too and can be turned into a fun exercise by enlisting help from the kids. Simply drill a hole, attach some thread and your shiny new decoration is ready to be hung on the family Christmas tree! Repurposed Wooden Christmas Ornaments 4. Mulching is a method integral to retaining moisture in soil by keeping it cool. It also helps suppress weeds, prevents frost heaving in the winter months, and generally gives your garden bed a lot more of a favourable and attractive look. Organic mulches also help improve the soil's structure, drainage, and nutrient-holding capacity as they decompose. Discarded timber is perfect for this and Accomplished Tree Management are renowned for their mulch expertise and products. • Protecting the Earth

✦ It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand planet Earth is in bad shape right now. Despite receiving numerous warning signs over the years, things have gone into overdrive of late, with a whole host of catastrophes illustrating the planet is facing seemingly inevitable peril, almost as if Mother Earth herself is desperately crying out for help. Read - https://www.brilliant-online.com/post/focus-on-world-environment-day-and-a-brighter-cleaner-healthier-tomorrow-for-us-all In all four corners of the planet we have witnessed devastating wildfires, droughts, record temperatures, cyclone, famines, earthquakes and floods. While we are fully cognizant of the situation, solutions seem to be limited to ongoing, high-level dialogue and good-intentioned pledges that don’t seem to ultimately even be scratching the surface. A cynic could argue that the way the world rallied in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is exactly the manner in which we should be turning our attentions to healing the planet. In all four corners of the planet we have witnessed devastating wildfires Global Recycling Day While many of the problems facing the planet may seem frustratingly out of reach to the average person, recycling is an area that we do have direct control over and thus are able to effect positive change through. Taking place globally for the sixth time on March 18 this year, the occasion strives to remind us of the importance of recycling our waste products in order to have a positively sustainable impact on the world around us. As the Global Recycling Day website says, “we must think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity.” March 18 this year, the occasion strives to remind us of the importance of recycling our waste products in order to have a positively sustainable impact on the world around us The site further explains: “Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. There is no doubt recycling is on the front line in the war to save the future of our planet and humanity.” You don’t need us to outline how or why to recycle. It might require adjusting our regular routine a little but it is something that is within our grasp and thus incumbent on each and every one of us to do as an absolute responsibility. International Day of Forests Three days later sees the 10th year anniversary of the International Day of Forests where countries all around the world are encouraged to undertake efforts to organise local, national, and international activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns to raise awareness as to the importance of forests on our eco-system and to emphasise their benefit to current and future generations. The theme this year is “ Forests and Health ”. Forests containing more than 60,000 tree species may cover more than 30% of the world’s land and provide life-sustaining resources for over 1.6 billion of the world’s poorest people, but each year more than 32 million acres of forests are lost - that’s an area roughly the size of England to put it into sobering perspective. As populations continue to expand so does demand for space, likewise commercial pressures on communities who see logging as their only viable source of income. Forests containing more than 60,000 tree species may cover more than 30% of the world’s land and provide life The knock-on effect cannot be underestimated. With the loss of trees comes the loss of animals and many rare species. Similar to the ocean, trees and vegetation help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in a process known as a carbon sink, which plays a critical role in climate change. Worryingly, the current level of deforestation directly results in between 12-18% of the world's carbon emissions, which is almost equal to all the CO2 from the global transport sector. We only need to take heed of rising temperatures, wildfires and floods as a very real reminder that the more we chop down forests, the closer we push ourselves to disaster. World Water Day On March 22 we have the United Nations observance day “World Water Day”. For those of us lucky enough to be reading this from a laptop or phone in a nice, safe, comfortable environment, the commodity of clean, accessible water could well be something we take for granted, if we are genuinely honest. However, there are 2.2 billion people currently living without access to safe water and countless communities that include schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms and factories that are being held back because their human rights to water and sanitation still need to be fulfilled. This is something that World Water Day strives to raise awareness of while advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. On March 22 we have the United Nations observance day “World Water Day” This year marks the 30th year anniversary of the occasion with the theme of accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. The global campaign, called “ Be the Change ”, encourages people to take action in their own lives to change the way they use, consume and manage water. You can play your part by checking out the website and following some of the suggestions to help. World Meteorological Day The following day, March 23, celebrates World Meteorological Day, which commemorates the coming into force of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organisation on that date in 1950. Since then, member nations of the UN sanctioned-body have continued to meet each year and coordinate in the fields of meteorology, operational hydrology and Earth sciences for the security of their population. Celebrates World Meteorological Day The word ‘meteorological’ relates to weather conditions and was a term that gained prominence when accurate meteorological records began 100 years ago. This year’s theme is ‘The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations’, while themes in previous years have included: ‘The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather’; ‘Understanding Clouds’; ‘Hotter, drier, wetter - Face the future’; ‘Polar meteorology - Understanding global impacts’; ‘Preventing and mitigating natural disasters’; and ‘Weather, climate and the air we breathe’.
