Wauchope to Celebrate 50 Years of Our Lady of Lourdes Church Building

✦ A significant milestone in Wauchope’s community history will be celebrated this month, with the 50th Anniversary of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church church building set to take place on Sunday 31 May 2026.
The occasion marks half a century since the church officially opened in May 1976 — a project remembered not only for its striking architectural design, but for the extraordinary community spirit that helped bring it to life.
The anniversary celebrations will begin with a 9:00am Anniversary Mass, followed by morning tea and a historical display in Ogilvie Hall at St Joseph’s Primary School, located behind the church.
A Celebration of Community
For many local families, the anniversary is not simply a celebration of a building, but a celebration of the people, memories, friendships and shared faith that have shaped the parish community over the past 50 years. Generations of parishioners, volunteers, clergy, families and supporters have played a part in the life of the church since its opening in 1976, when an estimated 600 to 700 people gathered to mark the occasion led by Bishop John Satterthwaite and Parish Priest Fr Bernard Kenny.
As part of the celebrations, visitors will be invited to explore photographs, stories and historical displays reflecting on the church’s journey through the decades — from its distinctive architectural design to the countless baptisms, weddings, celebrations and community moments that have unfolded within its walls.
Strengthening Community Connections in Wauchope
Current Parish Priest Fr Anselm Okeke said the anniversary offers an opportunity not only to honour the parish’s rich history, but also to celebrate the important role the church continues to play in bringing people together, supporting local families and strengthening community connections across Wauchope.
The event is open to all community members — including former parishioners, past students, local residents, and anyone interested in the history of Wauchope.
The parish is also inviting attendees to contribute a plate to share during morning tea, helping continue the strong sense of community connection that has defined the church for generations. Anniversary mugs and commemorative booklets are also available for pre-order.
