Panoptic Vision on eye health for young and middle-aged adults

Updated: Aug 14

Panoptic Vision is caring for your eye health for the whole family. This month we focus on eye health for young and middle-aged adults.

When was the last time you had an eye check?

Changes in eye health for young adults and middle-aged adults

One young man in his early 40s came to Panoptic Vision for a vision assessment, and he ended up discovering he had really advanced glaucoma. He had experienced tripping over his pets and not thinking it was anything serious, perhaps a new pair of glasses could help. After an eye assessment, he discovered he had lost all his peripheral vision and only had tunnel vision. This means he can no longer drive or even do his job. This is an irreversible process. It just goes to show how important it is to get an eye health check early and regularly.

Medicare help

Medicare gives a full rebate towards the cost of a comprehensive eye exam every three years for those under 65. People between the ages of 20 and 40 need to be especially aware to get their eyes checked regularly, even if it feels like there is nothing wrong. Panoptic Vision examines all areas of eye health as well as sight. A problem discovered in its early stages can be managed more successfully.

It is recommended that those who have diabetes or obesity come in more regularly for eye checks. With Medicare, anyone over the age of 65 is entitled to an annual full rebate. If you are diabetic, you get it every year.

Age-related changes

Many people in their 40s notice a downhill spiral with their vision. It's a normal age-related change when you find yourself pulling your phone away from you in order to read. Especially in our digital age of screens, we perform many visually-demanding tasks daily. Our eyes are taking a beating and are trying really hard to keep up. We need to give them a bit of help. Often prescription lenses make a huge difference and at Panoptic Vision, they make things fun with their huge range of interesting frames and comprehensive lenses choices.

An eye check is a health check too

Did you also know that cataracts can happen to anybody? It's not just for the elderly. Diabetes and high blood pressure affect the blood vessels of the body and that's something that can be seen in the eyes. When your optometrist looks into your eyes it's like taking a snapshot of the rest of your body. Nowadays there are advanced scans that can analyse different layers of the eye. If something is discovered during an eye check, Panoptic Vision can share the information so patients can also inform their ophthalmologist or GP. It's part of keeping one's general health on track.

How Panoptic Vision can help

Panoptic Vision in Lake Cathie and Bellingen are a local independent family practice serving the local community, across all age groups. They have specialty areas such as full scope, behavioural optometry and vision therapy.

Natasha Barnard-French and her team of optometrists have been doing a lot more work with stroke and head injury patients referred in by the Wauchope and the region's private hospital rehab clinics. They help patients navigate things that may not obviously appear to be a vision problem e.g headaches, balance, posture or light sensitivity.

Patients may have issues with their peripheral vision and may have difficulty in determining where their midline is which may affect their ability to walk in a straight line. Natasha's role is to find out how that can be restabilised. She often uses prisms to re-align an image. This alone can achieve amazing results and patients are often emotional when they finally manage to regain their balance for the first time in a long while and to do it independently without holding on to someone for support. Vision therapy can help support these new changes in patients until their whole system realigns itself.

Optometry is primary care, which means a patient can just come in without a need for a referral.

Panoptic Vision is helping patients build awareness of the importance of eye health for the whole family. Have you booked your eye checkup yet? It's never too early to do so! Your eye health starts with this step! ❋
