  • Do You Have Jaw Pain Without Realising It?

✦ Port Macquarie Welcomes New JAWS+ Clinic for Jaw Health. Headaches, jaw tension, teeth grinding, many of us accept these discomforts as part of everyday life. Yet health experts warn these symptoms may signal underlying jaw problems that often go undiagnosed. In Port Macquarie, a new clinic has opened to bring awareness and solutions to this overlooked issue. JAWS+ (Jaw Alignment + Wellness Solutions) is the first dedicated service of its kind on the Mid North Coast. The clinic is a collaboration between Mid North Coast Dental Centres and Port Medical Aesthetics Clinic , combining dental and medical expertise to help patients understand and manage jaw concerns. At Port Macquarie JAWS+ Clinic, Dr Claudia Long, Medical Practitioner, with Dr Akram Youssef, Owner of Mid North Coast Dental Centres A Hidden Health Problem Jaw issues such as bruxism (teeth grinding), jaw clenching, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction are far more common than most people realise. According to the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH), studies show bruxism affects between 8% and 31% of adults worldwide, though comprehensive Australian data is still limited ( ARCPOH Practice Sheet – Bruxism, 2020) . Meanwhile, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reports that TMJ disorders are among the leading contributors to non-dental orofacial pain, particularly in adults aged 20–40. Because the symptoms which are mostly persistent headaches, neck stiffness, facial pain, or ear discomfort are often attributed to stress or posture, jaw problems frequently go unnoticed. “As a GP I often see patients who have struggled for years with unexplained headaches or facial pain. JAWS+ finally gives us a dedicated service where patients can be assessed holistically by both medical and dental professionals, something that has been missing in our region until now,” said Dr Kristy Kostalas, Medical Director of Port Medical Aesthetics Clinic. Bruxism if left untreated, can cause permanent damage to your teeth and unnecessary pain in your face and jaw. How JAWS+ Works What makes JAWS+ unique is its integrated model of care. Patients are jointly assessed by a dentist and a medical practitioner, giving a comprehensive view of both the dental and muscular aspects of jaw pain. From this assessment, patients receive a tailored care plan which may include lifestyle changes, dental interventions, or medical management if required. “With JAWS+, patients do not need to travel to metropolitan centres for multidisciplinary support. We can now provide this level of care right here in Port Macquarie,” explained Dr Akram Youssef, owner of Mid North Coast Dental Centres. Services at JAWS+ include: Joint medical and dental assessments Personalised care plans for jaw pain, clenching, or teeth grinding Symptom management strategies for headaches, facial tension, or sleep disturbance Ongoing reviews and long-term support Dr Claudia Long, a medical practitioner at the clinic, said: “Often, people do not even realise their jaw could be linked to their headaches or teeth grinding. At JAWS+ we aim to give patients clear explanations, reassurance, and practical options for managing these concerns.” Local Access for Local Patients The JAWS+ clinic currently operates on Wednesdays at Mid North Coast Dental Centres in Port Macquarie, with plans to expand services as community demand grows. 📍 Address: Suite 7, 38 Clifton Dr, Port Macquarie, NSW 🌐 Website: www.midnorthcoastdental.com.au/jawsplus 📞 Phone: (02) 6581 4025 Why It Matters According to the American Dental Association (ADA) , untreated TMJ disorders and bruxism can contribute to chronic pain, poor sleep, and long-term tooth damage. For residents on the Mid North Coast, JAWS+ means access to collaborative, specialised care without leaving the region. For many, this clinic may be the missing piece in understanding long-term health concerns that were previously dismissed as “just stress”. ❋ ⚠️ Disclaimer: Prescription-only medicines may be discussed during consultation if clinically appropriate. Any treatment is only available following an in-person assessment with a qualified health professional, and suitability varies between individuals. About Mid North Coast Dental Centres Mid North Coast Dental Centres operates two clinics in Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie, providing comprehensive general, cosmetic, emergency and restorative dental services. • Facephi Recognised by Gartner® as Key Vendor in User Authentication 2025

✦ Spanish tech firm strengthens global role in protecting digital identity. Digital identity is increasingly central to everyday life. Alicante-based technology company Facephi has been recognised by international consultancy Gartner® as a Representative Vendor in its Market Guide for User Authentication 2025. The firm is also featured in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Digital Identity 2025 , reinforcing its standing as a leader in user authentication and digital identity verification. This marks the second consecutive year that Facephi has been included in Gartner’s industry-leading reports, which are widely regarded as benchmarks for global technology trends. Why This Matters Digital identity is increasingly central to everyday life, from online banking to healthcare access. As cybercrime and online fraud rise worldwide, the need for robust yet user-friendly authentication methods has never been greater. According to Gartner®, “By 2029, organisations implementing phishing-resistant MFA will experience 80% fewer credential-based security breaches than those still relying on traditional methods” (Gartner®, Market Guide for User Authentication 2025, published 11 August 2025). Facephi’s recognition highlights how technology providers are evolving to meet these challenges, delivering multi-factor, biometric, and behaviour-based solutions that strengthen security without creating barriers for users. What Facephi Offers Facephi has developed a unified digital identity ecosystem that integrates: Facial, fingerprint, and voice biometrics Passive liveness detection (to confirm real users, not spoofed identities) Behavioural analytics to monitor unusual patterns and detect fraud All of this is delivered through an orchestrated KYC (Know Your Customer) platform, available via cloud, hybrid, or on-premise deployment. Unlike traditional password-based security, Facephi enables passwordless authentication and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), both of which are fast becoming industry standards. “Legacy authentication methods cannot keep up with cyber threats and digital fraud,” said Javier Mira, CEO of Facephi. “Being featured in Gartner®’s reports reinforces our commitment to user-centric digital identity, where biometrics, KYC orchestration, and behavioural analysis work together to enhance security without compromising the experience.” Global Reach and Recognition Facephi currently works with banks, fintechs, and regulated industries in more than 30 countries, processing over 300 million transactions. In March, the company was recognised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for its excellence in presentation attack detection, topping international benchmarks set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Protecting Communities in the Digital Era For individuals and businesses alike, digital identity protection is now essential. As online fraud grows, companies like Facephi are helping communities, from regional banks to global service providers, create safer, more accessible, and fraud-free processes. With its latest recognition by Gartner®, Facephi cements its role as a trusted innovator in keeping digital interactions secure while ensuring technology remains human-focused and user-friendly. ❋ More Brilliant stories on technological sparks: Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • Springing Back into Life!

✦ Spring around the World Ask many people what their favourite season is and you’ll no doubt get a mixed bag of responses. Some will opt for the warmth of the summer months, some veer towards the colder crisper times of winter. Of course, it depends on where you live. Northern hemisphere seasons can offer up brutal winters contrasting with overbearing summers. Weather patterns in the southern reaches of the world have also become erratic of late as the impact of climate change becomes evidently apparent. For many, however, spring is a firm favourite - the transition from winter to summer, almost a compromise of sorts. It is typically a time for rebirth and renewal, when the heavy winter clothes are ditched as temperatures increase and we glance towards warm-weather activities. Flowers bloom, baby animals are born, and people around the world celebrate the new season through a wide and varied range of festivals and traditions. Arguably for those in Australia this year the onset of spring is even more eagerly anticipated than usual due to the gloomy months of lockdown brought upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic. To welcome spring this year, Brilliant-Online takes a look at how the season is celebrated and ushered in via some of the more unusual customs and traditions across various countries around the world. Many thanks to Richard Shaw for his macro photos on insect life. Photo Credit: Richard Shaw, richscapephotography.com Explosion of joy and colour Celebrating the Holi festival in India India is renowned for its vibrant celebration of life through sounds, smells and colours and the Indian spring festival of love known as Holi has this in abundance. Communities all across the country convene to engage in giant parties with bonfires, music, food, dancing and merriment all under clouds of colourful powders that they mix with water and cover themselves with. It truly is an explosion of joy and colour to welcome in the new season! It is very similar in Thailand during the Songkran festival, the country’s new year celebration that occurs shortly after the spring equinox. A week long celebration involves lots of eating, drinking, loud music, and firecrackers! It also signifies the end of the blisteringly hot weather and water is a key component. It is almost impossible to venture outdoors anywhere in the country during this time without getting wet and covered in coloured powders. It brings everyone together from local communities, to tourists, to resident Buddhist monks – it is absolutely a time to be happy and let loose! A smashing time! Cherry blossoms signify the arrival of Spring in Japan. If one place tends to be universally linked to spring it is Japan. The season sees the blooming of cherry blossom trees that provide such a beautiful, colourful backdrop to some of the most populous and developed cities in the world, such as Tokyo and Osaka. In fact, the season has made Japan one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet from late March to early May as people flock to witness the splendour of nature for themselves and residents host parties under the trees, a tradition that has taken place for centuries. The Netherlands is famous for its tulip flowers and no time is this best demonstrated than during the Flower Parade of Bollenstreek. Huge elaborate floats made up of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils parade through several villages en route from Noordwijk to Haarlem to welcome in the spring season. Things get a little louder in Greece where residents welcome spring by throwing clay pots full of water out their windows, resulting in a thunderous cacophony of shattering crockery! The custom is believed to ward off bad spirits, with people often taking home shards of the pots as good luck charms. Here comes the sun In Mexico revellers travel to the Teotihuacan Pyramid for a ceremony where they all adorn white robes, gather at the base of the structure and raise their arms to the sky to welcome the new season with all its sunshine and energy. Some even climb the pyramid in an effort to get even closer to the sun! Many Central Asia countries welcome the first full day of spring with Nowruz, meaning “new day” in Persian, which signifies a month-long festival of extravagant celebrations. “Think Christmas, New Year’s, and Fourth of July combined,” says CNN. The egg is arguably the most symbolic sign relating to Easter due to its biblical connotations of rebirth and new life. Confectionery Easter eggs have been a huge hit with children and adults for as long as we care to remember in certain parts of the world with the chocolate Easter Bilby especially popular in Australia. Roll with it In the USA the annual White House Easter Egg Roll has become widely recognised as the official welcoming of spring. The tradition dates back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes allowed a group of local schoolchildren to partake in the game of egg-rolling on the White House lawn. Over the years things have progressed and there are now full garden parties complete with fun and games with the President and First Lady often in attendance. In the town of Zenica in Bosnia the significance of the egg is no different, even if its consumption is! There they celebrate spring’s arrival with “Cimburijada”, or the Festival of Scrambled Eggs. The cooking begins at dawn on the first day of spring and enough scrambled eggs are made to serve entire villages, with crowds gathered in the streets with pots and pans awaiting their free serving! Symbolism is also an important part of spring festivals in Switzerland. Blanketed in snow for much of the bitter winter, the country welcomes spring by building a snowman which is subsequently burned. The quicker the fire reaches the head of the snowman is an indication that more favourable summer weather is on its way! There is a similar tradition in Poland called the drowning of the Marzanna, which dates back to the 16th century. A doll, usually made of straw and symbolising the cold winter weather, is paraded in front of crowds through the streets before being tossed into the local river to represent the passing of winter and the welcome of spring. Last but not least we travel to Lanark in central Scotland for a tradition so old no one can recall how, when or why it started! Whuppity Scoorie sees local children running around wielding sticks adorned with balls of crumpled paper near dusk on the first of March each year. They run around the town’s bell until it rings at 6pm following six months of silence during the desolate winter days. It is a mysterious custom that locals believe originated to rid evil spirits before spring arrived. There are many other customs in many other countries welcoming in the spring season that have been practised for generations. One thing is clear – wherever you celebrate the onset of spring, immerse yourself in the local culture and customs and, above all else, enjoy! • Advocating for Child Safety at TG's Child Care

✦ Families and children trust TG's as a safe and secure space where Playing is Learning for Life! Increasingly, governments, institutions and organisations are giving priority to recognising the unique potential dangers children may face in their daily lives, be it at home, school or in public places. It's about taking steps to prevent against challenges and nasty incidents. Taking the appropriate safety measures can help reduce the number of unintentional accidents. Our children trust us to keep them safe. As parents, educators and adults around children, we can also educate children about the potential dangers and teach them what they need to do to keep themselves safe and how to respond in an emergency. TG's Child Care has their Work Healthy Safety (WHS) incorporated into their ESG strategy to protect the health, safety and welfare of all workers and and others in relation to Australia's workplaces and work activities. Read about how TG's implements WHS here. Thank you to the traffic warden for keeping the children safe! Changes from the ACECQA and NQF TG's is always on the ball when it comes to changes and updates in regulations from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority ( ACECQA ) and the National Quality Framework ( NQF ). In fact, October 2023 saw the largest update in these regulations since the introduction of the National Quality Framework. These changes are implemented at TG's and shared with the families as well. Child Safe Standards These are a set of ten standards to meet in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children. They help organisations working with children to create a culture of safety and accountability. TG's is committed to protecting the children and these standards are strictly implemented. TG's keeps an open line of communication with families so they can also be familiar with the standards and procedures at TG's. It is about working in partnership to create a safe and nurturing environment for all children. Safe Sleep Practices apply to our baby dolls too! Safe Sleep Practices Under the new regulations, TG's is required to update their policies and procedures for sleep and rest to cover the new National Regulations. A sleep and rest risk assessment is to be conducted at least once every 12 months, and as soon as practicable upon being aware of any situation that may affect the safety, health or wellbeing of children during sleep and rest. Reasonable steps are taken to ensure the children's needs for sleep and rest are met, taking into account their ages, developmental stages and individual needs. Other safety regulations pertain to areas such as: Arrival and Departure of Children Child Protection and Child Safe NSW Emergency and Evacuation Excursion First Aid Governance and Service Management Grievance Resolution Interactions with Children Professional Development and Study Progression Providing Safe Environments Record Keeping Sleep and Rest Students Volunteers and Visitors Water Safety Sun Safety at TG's At TG's, children love being outdoors in summer, exploring the beautiful gardens , going on beach kindys , and building relationships with their friends and Educators. TG's children know about the importance of sun safety. And they're here to share some of their Sun Safety tips with you! Put on your sun hats! Get a wide-brimmed one to provide ample shade for your face, neck and ears. Wear sun-safe clothing that covers as much of the skin as possible, especially the shoulders, back and stomach. TG's recommends loose fitting shirts and dresses with sleeves and collars or covered neckline, and longer style skirts, shorts and pants. Wear sunscreen! Get a high SPF sunscreen to apply on exposed skin whenever you are outdoors. TG's children apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside. Bring a water bottle. Staying hydrated in hot weather helps children to feel energised and ready for a day of PLAY! Learn to be 'sun-smart' like TG's children! This way, we can all have fun in the sun while staying safe and healthy. So everyone is off to a great start, TG’s also provides each child with a sunsmart and sunsafe bucket wide-brimmed hat when they commence at the service. And the children LOVE their happy sun hats! Do you have A Little MEG in your pocket? Child Safety and Protection is not just about external, physical dangers. One also has to take care of one's mental space. Mental health and wellbeing are key to keeping a child safe, open and joyful. Mindfulness, Empathy and Gratitude are powerful tools every TG's child has in their pockets wherever they go. They experience the benefits of meditating in nature, listening to the sounds and feeling all the senses as they learn to self-regulate to a state of calm and manage their feelings. TG's children build strong skills in mindfulness, empathy and gratitude. They learn to take care of themselves, as well as others. Meditating in nature means getting very still and quiet... • A Picnic to Remember: Celebrating the Sweetness of Our Children's First Year in School

As my little girl wrapped up her first year of Précoce - the early education programme for three- to four-year-olds in the Luxembourgish public school system, I found myself reflecting on just how she had flourished in the space of a year. She started out as a shy, timid little thing, clinging to us at the classroom door. But slowly, day by day, something shifted; her confidence grew, her Luxembourgish flowed more freely, and she developed a genuine love for school. This transformation was nurtured by a wonderful team of teachers and educators, as well as the friendships she has formed along the way. Victoria thriving at school, gently nurtured by kind hearts and dear friendships For me too, this first year brought unexpected serendipities: the forming of dear friendships with other splendid mothers. In true Luxembourgish fashion - where cultures meet and languages beautifully entwine, our group is a vibrant tapestry of nationalities and backgrounds, each of us having come to call Luxembourg home in our own way. To mark the end of the school year, we mums gathered in the shade of a leafy park for a charming potluck picnic. There, amidst our children's playful exuberance and the welcoming summer breeze, we celebrated their milestones. Meeting splendid supermums and their lovely children And oh, the food! Each dish was as heartfelt as it was delicious, a reflection of the hands and hearts that made them. Cecilia’s Quiche Lorraine Cecilia, an ethnography researcher and devoted mother to Elric, lovingly made her mother’s beloved Quiche Lorraine, continuing a cherished family tradition. Selcan’s Poğaça Selcan, a manager and adoring mum to Ada, brought along freshly baked poğaça - Turkish cheesey pastries delicately garnished with parsley. Pogaca photo by Misssgibi Yemek Tarifleri Lisa’s Carrot Cake Lisa, an emergency physician and affectionate mum to Sia, prepared a most scrumptious carrot cake with the sweetest assistance from her daughter. My Italian Pizzas As for me, Italian cooking has always felt like more than mere cuisine - it is a philosophy; an artful way of life. I brought along freshly made pizzas: thin-crusted and topped with love. But truly, how do we mums do it all? • Cultured Meat in Australia: Is It Safe, Sustainable, and for Everyone?

✦ We are looking at the dawn of lab-grown meat Down Under as Australia takes a big, bold bite into the future of food. In a world-first for the Southern Hemisphere, food tech companies are receiving approvals from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to sell cultured meat , a product grown entirely from animal cells, not farm animals. So what does this mean for your dinner plate, your health, your wallet, and the planet? Let’s dive into the future of cultured meat in Australia. A piece of cell-cultured Japanese quail foie gras in the test kitchen of lab-grown meat startup Vow. Photo: abc.net.au Nadia Daly Is Cultured Meat Safe to Eat Long Term? The short answer? Yes, according to food regulators. FSANZ’s approval came only after a rigorous safety assessment. Vow’s cultivated quail meat passed tests for: Absence of pathogens Non-use of antibiotics or hormones Safety of growth media and additives But here’s the long answer: while short-term safety is verified, long-term health impacts  of regularly consuming lab-grown meat still need to be studied. That includes examining how nutrient absorption, cell scaffolding materials, and bioavailability compare to traditional meat. Researchers and health bodies agree that as cultured meat becomes more widespread, we’ll need longitudinal data to ensure sustained safety across generations. How Will Cultured Meat Impact the Planet? If done right, cell-based meat could radically reshape our ecosystems for the better. Here’s how: Up to 90% less land use Significantly less water consumption Reduction in animal agriculture-related emissions Optimistic projections suggest that by 2030 , cultured meat could be carbon‑lighter and resource‑efficient, especially when powered by renewable energy and with process innovation. But there’s a catch. A recent study by UC Davis showed that in its current production form, cultured meat may emit more CO₂ than beef, if fossil fuels power production and if synthetic growth media aren’t optimised. The real environmental payoff comes with: Renewable-powered bioreactors Improved fermentation and nutrient systems Full circular waste systems Is cultured meat going to be a relief for our animal friends? Will It Be Affordable, Or Just for the Rich? This is the trillion-dollar question. Right now, the price of cultured meat sits between $50–$100 per portion , which limits access to high-end restaurants and novelty menus (like Vow’s Forged Parfait , cultured quail liver mousse served at exclusive venues in Singapore and Sydney). But companies like Magic Valley , a Melbourne-based start-up, are on a mission to democratise lab-grown meat. Their first product? Cultured lamb mince, with a goal of hitting supermarkets by 2026 at just AUD $6/kg, which is on par or cheaper than traditional lamb. As scale improves and new non-animal, plant-based growth media become the norm, prices are expected to plummet. Industry leaders estimate price parity with farm-raised meat by the late 2020s. Watch How Cultivated Meat Is Produced at Magic Valley What’s Next for the Average Aussie Diner? You won’t be serving lab-grown burgers at your next barbecue just yet, but you may see cultivated quail, chicken, or lamb pop up on menus and shelves sooner than you think. Here’s what to expect: Fine dining first, then gradual rollout to specialty grocers Celebrity chefs showcasing the ethical edge of lab meat Transparent labelling to help consumers make informed choices Expanded public education around how cell-based meat is made With consumer trust, supportive regulation, and continued innovation, Australia could be the Silicon Valley of sustainable meat, bringing together ethics, science, and taste. Would this become part of your shopping list? Photo: Wix Final Thoughts Cultured meat isn’t science fiction anymore. It’s science on your fork. ✔️ It’s safe to eat today. ✔️ It could be better for the planet. ✔️ And it’s likely to be affordable and accessible by 2030. As Australian innovators lead the charge, we must ask: are we ready to redefine meat, not just by taste, but by technology, ethics, and sustainability? Would you try lab-grown lamb if it tasted just like the real thing? ❋ Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • Why Skin Cancer Awareness Could Save Your Life

✦ At Brilliant-Online, we believe in sharing stories that matter. Stories that have the power to inform, connect and, sometimes, save lives. You may have read our earlier feature, Confronting the C-Word . In it, we touched on the emotional, physical and personal toll of cancer. Today, we continue that conversation with a spotlight on one of the most preventable, and yet most common, types of cancer in Australia: skin cancer . Around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70 . Why Australians Need to Be Extra Vigilant Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In fact, around two in three Australians  will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70. Our beautiful sunny climate, combined with outdoor lifestyles, means we are exposed to more ultraviolet (UV) radiation than most populations globally. This exposure, while often invisible and painless in the moment, can cause permanent damage to the skin, leading to melanoma and other skin cancers. The risk increases with every sunburn, every unprotected beach day, and every year that passes without regular skin checks. Understanding the Risks of Developing Skin Cancer According to DNA Weekly , there are several factors that heighten the risk of developing skin cancer: Prolonged sun exposure, especially during peak UV hours Fair skin or light-coloured eyes, which have less melanin for natural protection A history of sunburns, particularly in childhood Family or personal history of skin cancer The presence of moles or unusual skin lesions Use of tanning beds – these are especially harmful and should be avoided entirely It’s important to remember that skin cancer doesn’t discriminate. It can affect people of all skin tones and ages, even those who consider themselves healthy and active. Simple Steps to Protect Your Skin Fortunately, there are easy, practical habits we can all adopt to reduce our risk: Wear sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. Look for broad-spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every two hours if you are outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. Seek shade, especially between 10am and 4pm when UV radiation is at its strongest. Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection. Avoid tanning beds altogether. They’re not a safe alternative to sun exposure. These small actions, practiced regularly, can make a significant difference. Early Detection: What to Look For Skin cancer can often be spotted early—if you know what to look for. Be aware of any new or changing moles, freckles or spots. The “ABCDE” rule is a helpful guide: A symmetry – one half doesn’t match the other B order – edges are irregular or blurred C olour – varied shades of brown, black, red or white D iameter – larger than 6mm E volving – changes in size, shape or colour If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait. See a GP or dermatologist. Early detection is key  to treating skin cancer effectively and with minimal intervention. A Shared Responsibility Raising awareness is not just for those at risk, it’s for all of us. A gentle reminder to a friend or loved one to wear sunscreen or book a skin check might be the nudge that saves a life. At Brilliant-Online, we champion stories that empower and inform. Skin cancer doesn’t have to be a life-altering diagnosis if we stay vigilant, care for our skin and support one another through awareness and action. Because sometimes, a little awareness is all it takes. ❋ Discover the Magic of Digital PR with Brilliant-Online Welcome to Brilliant-Online, where your stories take centre stage and your brand shines in the spotlight! • Recipe for Dog Liver Bites

✦ Pamper your canine darlings with this homemade treat. A way to a dog's heart is through their stomachs! Dog lickin' good! Photo: James Barker, Unsplash Did you know that liver is a kind of superfood for dogs? It's a great source of protein and does not have as much fat as muscle meat. It's also rich in nutrients such as Vitamin A, D, B, folic acid, iron and other minerals like copper and zinc. All these help with their immune functions, anaemia and supports bone and joint health. *Always check with your vet about the appropriate amount of any type of food to give to your dog. This may vary depending on the breed, size and health conditions etc. For this recipe you can use beef or chicken liver. If you don't have a food processor, a blender or liquidizer would work as well. Otherwise you can finely chop the oats and liver before cooking. Dog Liver Bites (Photo: allrecipes.com) Ingredients 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ pound chicken livers, rinsed and trimmed 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or more as needed Method Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish and line it with parchment paper. Add oats to the bowl of a food processor; pulse until finely chopped, 10 to 15 seconds. Transfer oats to a large bowl and mix in flour. Place livers in the food processor and process until smooth, 10 to 15 seconds. Add eggs and blend until well combined, about 10 seconds. Add oil and process until incorporated. Add liver mixture to oat and flour mixture; stir until well blended. Spoon into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven until firm to the touch but not hard and crispy, 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before cutting into 50 pieces. And there you have it! Homemade (with love) dog liver bites that's going to go down a real treat! We are going to have to change the expression 'it's a dog's life' to mean the complete opposite nowadays, given the pampering our canine friends receive from their Forever Homes! • The Woof-derful World of Dogs in Sport!

✦ On first glance the words “dog” and “sport” do not really seem to sit comfortably in the same sentence. Man’s best friend kicking a footie around, swimming laps of the pool, swinging a golf club or serving an ace? Of course not! However, dig a little deeper and there are more than the fair share of sports-related activities that our furry buddies can and do get involved in. The majority of dogs are full of beans with boundless energy levels and that is something that needs to be addressed. They absolutely need to burn off that pent up energy which often means more than just a brief walk around the block or in the local park. Maybe you could consider introducing your beloved pooch to some of the following! The most obvious commercial sport that springs to mind is greyhound racing. Established over 100 years ago, typically dogs will race around an oval track chasing what they believe is a hare or rabbit but what is actually an artificial lure, most often a mechanical form of windsock. It is a sport that is hugely popular in the USA, UK and Australia where it has become a key component of the betting and gambling industry. Australia is home to the world’s largest commercial greyhound racing industry which saw $7 billion placed in bets in 2019/20 alone. Dogs competing with their owners in running competitions has become very popular Animal rights and welfare groups are highly critical of the sport though, especially the fact that so many of the dogs are left abandoned after they retire from the track. Adoption movements spearheaded by kennel owners have subsequently become more prevalent in recent years to help the retired dogs find homes – recent figures showing adoption rates of over 95% in the United States alone suggest they are on their way to achieving their goals. Take away the oval course and add some snow and you have sled dog racing! This winter sport sees timed competitions where a team of dogs pull a sled manned by a driver around a designated course with the quickest team declared the winner. Races include sprints which can be anywhere from four to 100 miles, mid-distance which is between 100 to 300 miles and long-distance where anywhere between 300 to over 1,000 miles are covered. Typically categories include four-dog, six-dog, eight-dog and 10-dog teams. Sled dog racing is especially popular in the Arctic regions of the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland and some European countries. It was a entered as a demonstration sport at the 1932, 1952 and 1994 Winter Olympics although it never did receive official event recognition or status. Surf’s Up! Maybe when the Beach Boys sang the iconic lyrics “Let’s go surfing now everybody’s learning how” in their 1962 hit Surfin’ Safari they were also referring to dogs when they said everybody! Regardless, dog surfing is very much a thing, starting way before the Wilson brothers formed their legendary group. Originating in Hawaii and California back in the 1920s, dog surfing has grown in popularity over the years whereby competitions and exhibitions now feature regularly in various coastal areas of the United States. Dogs are actually trained to surf the ocean’s waves on either surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards or windsurf boards, either alone or joined by a human companion. The Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition at Imperial Beach in California is considered the biggest event of its kind. In June 2012 the competition saw over 50 dogs participate and also three Guinness World Records broken, including a new record of 18 dogs on a surfboard - the most ever photographed! Closer to home we have the Noosa Surfing Dog Championship, an annual event founded in 2012 and organised by online retailer VetShopAustralia. It is an invitational event in which eight to 10 dog-human-combo teams use stand-up paddle boards to win the Best Wave Award which is judged on skill, coordination between dog and person, and entertainment value. This year’s event took place on March 5 at First Point in Noosa with Team Freddy claiming the trophy. Still in the water we have what is known as Dock Diving or Dock Jumping. This sees the dog jump from an elevated height into a pool or body or water with the goal to achieve the furthest distance. The jump distance is measured from the lateral midpoint of the end of the dock to the point at which the base of the dog’s tail breaks the water’s surface. Think of it as a derivative of long jump, with water instead of sand, and you’re on the right track! Since originating in 1997, annual competitions have sprung up in the likes of the USA, UK, Australia, Germany and Austria. The doggy version of the long jump! On the pull! Pulling sports have increased in popularity in recent years whereby dogs and humans combine to engage in the likes of Canicross (cross country running with dogs), Bikejoring (cycling with dogs) and Skijoring (skiing with dogs). Canicross is especially popular in the UK and across Europe where regular events are held. Distances vary, anywhere from a mile up to 28 miles or more. Elsewhere, there is “Disc Dog”, otherwise known as Dog Frisbee - and there are no points for guessing how this game works! Owners and dogs combine with the former throwing the frisbee for his or her furry friend to catch in their mouth. Competitions are staged globally with categories including long distance, freestyle and toss and fetch. It is a hugely popular sport, mainly due to its simplicity and accessibility, and dog disc clubs can be found all across the world, including in Australia. Frisbee Competition Finally we have what is known as “Dog Agility”. This sport sees a handler assist an unleashed dog through an obstacle course race which is judged by both time and accuracy. Handlers are not permitted to interact by touch and can only use their voice or gestures to help the dog navigate the course which emcompasses tunnels, jumps, hurdles and various other obstacles. It is a complex sport that requires intensive, disciplined training to achieve an exceptional understanding between the handler and the dog. So there you have it, a brief but hopefully engaging and entertaining insight into the wild, sometimes weird but always wonderful world of dogs in sport! Maybe, after all, it isn’t such a stretch to imagine our furry friends one day kicking a footie around, swimming laps of the pool, etc, etc... • Walk into the Future with the Indigenous Peoples and TG's Urangan

✦ At TG's Child Care Urangan, Playing is Learning for Life takes place everywhere. It is nurtured within TG's beautiful award-winning gardens and playspaces, and it also takes place beyond TG's to Urangan's community. TG's Urangan is harnessing the ancient wisdom of indigenous cultures to support the children in building a sense of identity - this is where they learn how everything and everyone fits together in belonging, being and becoming. This is thanks to TG's Urangan's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) where their Heal Country commitment features strongly in their programs and curriculum. TG's has been implementing indigenous programs in all of their six centres as a way to boost their sustainability values and help children go even further in eco and social intelligence. And in true blue TG's style, all their activities are fun, creative and keeps the children excited and delighted! Let's go to the beach! A Learning Journey in Nature TG's children learn about how they can impact the environment, social aspects and economy of their locations. No one person is too small to make a difference, and TG's educators engage the children in activities that are relevant and identifiable for them. When children are aware they have the power to make a difference in caring for the planet or their communities, it makes them hungry to do more. This is how TG's children become well-rounded young citizens who form meaningful connections with their world through belonging, being and becoming. Every fortnight, the children at TG's Urangan go on a Beach Kindy excursion. It is one of the highlights of the activities at TG's, and it is often met by squeals of delight! The children know they are in for a treat and they are going to love exploring the great outdoors and simply soak up the lessons nature has for them. Every element of the coast, the sand, the sea has something mysterious and magical to reveal. When you look at things through the eyes of a child, the beach becomes more than just a place you go to bathe, suntan and have a bit of a paddle. Experience a Beach Kindy with TG's children and you'll see what a rich world there is in every grain of sand and every wave brings you a little miracle you have seen a million times but never really noticed. TG's Urangan's Beach Kindy really helps you open your eyes. Do you know where corals come from? TG's children do! They know why it loses its colour and they are even little experts at the anatomy of a fish! Sir David Attenborough would be highly impressed by what TG's children have learnt from their Beach Kindys! These outings are when learning is brought to life and the entire world becomes a fertile ground for the children's learning journeys. Even TG's educators openly admit they love being on these trips where they can participate in the children's excitement as they watch where crabs tunnel in the sand, and how they get curious about oyster shells. It is like making time stand still when you hold a piece of nature's miracle in your hands with a child and marvel over every texture and every shade of colour in it. Most importantly, going on Beach Kindys allows the children to get out into the community and it nurtures a deep, loving appreciation of the land. The children wisely know they only leave footprints. That is what Butchulla lore teaches them. And of course, they also leave a lot of smiles and laughter there, which is perfectly welcome and does not harm the environment - laughter is pollution-free and eco-friendly after all! The richness of a Beach Kindy does not just stop there. The children learn important life skills such as how to be safe in public, what road safety is all about and also how to be safe in water. The children learn how to take care of themselves and watch out for each other, and what it means to respect the community they are in. Fresh air and sunshine make learning a joy! The joy of running on the beach with one another is something every child should have the opportunity to experience and enjoy. There is plenty of room to stretch their legs and develop their gross motor skills. The next time you go to the beach, really feel how the sand moves beneath your soles, how warm and ticklish it can feel when waves lap against your feet. Salt water when it dries leaves a special feeling on your skin, and simply being out in fresh air and the sun makes your body feel strong and open. (Perhaps we are not too different from plants… we need a bit of sunlight to grow well!) Basically, you will never see the beach or the sea in the same way again after you've experienced one of TG's Urangan's Beach Kindys! A Fun Trek through the Bush TG's Urangan's other fortnightly indigenous-culture-inspired activity is their Bush Kindys. Australia is rich in a variety of landscapes and there is so much to explore, all we need is the time to do it. The older children go to the Botanical Gardens for their Bush Kindy excursions. There is a small park where the children have fun practising their balancing and coordination skills walking on the swinging bridge and log stumps. They also make music with the big xylophone and they even learn how to pump water. It is easier when you have a friend to help you do it - after all, fun shared is fun doubled! The activities are endless and the children are fully engaged in exploring, experimenting, being curious and having fun. Visits to the Butchulla garden is something the children love. This is where TG's educators talk about the native plants, what Butchulla lore says and the children learn what can be eaten for bush tucker. As designated and trusted little gardeners for TG's gardens, the children are familiar with learning about all kinds of plants. It makes them open and ready to get even more curious about new species of plants they do not recognise. They also get to see and learn about native animals such as native stingless bees (yes, they are friends, and the sugarbag honey these bees produce are a highly appreciated food of the Aborigines), kookaburras and cockatoos. The children learn not just what they look like, but also how they sound, what these animals like to do and how they behave. So if you need a little expert on Australia's indigenous flora and fauna, tap on the shoulder of one of TG's children, and they may just sit down with you and delight you with amazing information about a special plant or animal. TG's Urangan's Beach and Bush Kindys provide a rich learning experience where the children are engaged in real life. It helps them feel connected to their communities and the environment. They can see everyone's place in it, and how each tiny little thing contributes to making the entire ecosystem or community work smoothly. They also develop their gross and fine motor skills as well as learn valuable social, language and team work skills. The beauty of it is, the children always come back from their Beach or Bush Kindys with many exciting stories to tell and every excursion brings something new and different. Even families look forward to these excursions, because they know there'll be an interesting talk at dinner time and they'll learn a thing or two from the children! The Magic of Friendships Building long lasting friendships on our Kindys! Incorporating Butchulla culture into TG's Urangan's curriculum helps to nurture the relationships the children have with their peers, educators and people in their communities. The children form beautiful friendships during these excursions - perhaps it is being in the loving embrace of nature and indigenous culture that enriches these connections even more. These friendships help the children with communication and socialisation development. And of course, what is just as priceless… oodles of giggles and happy memories! TG’s supports the children to grow strong friendships and the bond they form with one another helps them feel safe, connected, loved and supported. Childhood is a magical time for friendships, and it forms part of TG's magic and sensation of how it 'feels just right' when you step into TG's gardens and playspaces. The children are part of generating this magic too. Taking Indigenous Wisdom into the Future As Butchulla's three lores align perfectly with TG's sustainability values (social, economic and environmental), TG's Urangan has been going full steam ahead with their Heal Country commitment. The 3 Butchulla Lores are: 1. What is good for the land comes first. 2. Do not take or touch anything that doesn’t belong to you. 3. If you have plenty, you must share. The children build a sense of pride and responsibility learning they have the skills and knowledge to take care of their environment. It is an empowering feeling when a child realises there is so much they can do, and size really does not matter. Many (little) hands make light work on our Bush Kindys! Each of us can make a difference. The beach and the sea may be there for us, and we are free to explore the sand and sea life, but it is also important to have an awareness of the impact our actions can have. The children have incorporated a genuine respect for their environment, and it is something that comes naturally to them now. What TG's Urangan is so proud of is how the children, in their own unique way, are all leaving beautiful footprints on the land. TG's children have become the trusted stewardship of their planet's future. We trust in these little but strong hands, and they are becoming confident leaders who are supported by the ancient guidance of Australia's indigenous peoples. A Beach or Bush Kindy this weekend, anyone? TG's Urangan is celebrating with an Open Day on 15th January 2022, from 11am to 2pm at TG's Child Care Urangan, 61 Miller St, Urangan QLD 4655, Australia. • The Tails of Trumpet the Thai Cat!

✦ With August 8 marking International Cat Day, we caught up with a cute little furry feline who is living a splendid life in the tropical paradise of Phuket in Thailand! Meow! Hello, my name is Trumpet! I only know this as it is what my hooman friends regularly say when they see me or are calling me. I never used to have a name before they came – I was just a little white cat. I was born in a lush landscape surrounded by trees, which my Mama later told us was called a jungle. I had several brothers and sisters that looked just like me and who I used to play with regularly. We had such fun chasing through the trees and getting to know the other animals that lived there such as squirrels, monkeys, birds, geckos, bees, butterflies, bats and a huge variety of insects. There were certain animals that we were warned not to go near but to run far and fast from if we ever saw them, two of which I remember being called snakes and monitor lizards! Meow! Hello, my name is Trumpet! My favourite animal friends, however, should have really scared me but absolutely didn’t. They were so kind and graceful and would always smile when they saw me, despite me being so much smaller and weaker than them. My Mama told me these animals were called elephants, the king of the jungle, and they lived near us as they worked in the day taking lots of loud, noisy tourists on treks into the heart of the jungle. Why, I don’t know, but my Mama said our elephant friends were well looked after and were never left wanting for food or shelter, especially when the heavy monsoon rains would come. Nearby our jungle playland was a big house where I would sometimes see people although me and my family were far more scared of them than any of the animals we regularly came across in our world. Sometimes the people would leave scraps of food outside and we would sneak up late at night with only the moonlight and our bravery to guide us in order to take them. Sometimes there would be fish bones which were my absolute favourite! Trumpet has Elephant Friends and is not afraid of them Then suddenly one day the people disappeared. My Mama said she heard the local workers at the elephant camp saying it was because of some sort of virus that the people had started by eating bats in a faraway place called China and which had spread throughout the rest of the world. It sounded scary but not half as much as the thought of people eating my friends – gulp! My Mama always said people were supposed to be smart but they didn’t seem so to me! Braver and smarter One day my Mama never came home. I still don’t know what happened to her but my brothers and sisters and I missed her terribly and felt lost without her. It meant we had to be braver and smarter in looking after ourselves, making trips further than we did before into areas where there were many more people. Some were kind and would feed us but some were mean and would shoo us away. I found people to be very strange beings! Then, one by one, my brothers and sisters started to get ill and disappear until, one day, I was left completely alone. I was scared at first but my friends in the jungle looked after me and made sure I had company and protection, especially the elephants. It was around this time when I met the people that gave me my name and made me realise that not all people are strange or mean. Wishing all cats Happy International Cat Day It was a big man with a hairy face and a small woman who moved into the house close to our jungle home that me, my brothers and sisters and Mama used to visit so often. I could tell they were different as they also had two cats with them, although these two cats did not go outside at any point. Still, I could see the couple were very kind to the two cats as I would sneak up close to the house to take a peek every evening and see them receiving food, being brushed and fussed and having warm, comfortable blankets and baskets to sleep in. Sometimes late at night I would lie outside the window and talk to one of the cats, a big black boy I later learned was called Gus. He was very friendly and we fast became good friends! One day while I was near the house, the couple saw me and called me over, making a kind of strange kissing sounding noise with their lips to attract my attention! As I now considered myself to be a big boy, I decided not to be scared and went over to them. They were very gentle as they stroked my coat and offered me some food, which was delicious! I decided I could trust them and would visit more often. As I did, I got closer and closer to the couple, who I decided to call “hoomans” as they were affectionate and kind. They started to call me “trumpet” because, apparently, I made lots of noise when I spoke to them! I still don't really know what a trumpet is but I like it as a name! They started to feed me fish twice a week in a cute little bowl and healthy portions of biscuits twice a day, which were yummy! They also bought me a little kennel with a cushion inside which was lovely to sleep on and allowed me to shelter from the rain. I was also given several toys to play with and the hoomans started to tickle my belly and brush me which was soothing and relaxing and helped me fall asleep. It also kept my coat clean and fresh and made me appear even more handsome, they said! I got closer and close to the "hoomans" I don’t know how long my hooman friends will be here but I hope it is forever. I did hear them saying that if they decided to move from the house then they would probably take me with them, which made me feel happy and wanted. I would miss my animal friends and the jungle but am sure I would make new friends elsewhere. For now, however, I am happy being able to roam free and get into all manner of adventures, knowing that I have some good friends who take care of me and always make sure I have yummy food to eat! I enjoy sitting with them at night on the balcony of the house where I can look out over the jungle to see my elephant friends and across to the sea where all the fish live! I know I am very lucky and just hope all the cats out there in the big wide world have a very happy international cat day, just like me!
