Uncovering the hidden crisis of youth homelessness in Australia

Updated: Aug 16

✦ Youth homelessness is a growing issue in Australia, one that often goes unnoticed despite its severity and long-lasting impact.

The statistics are alarming: over 17,600 children under the age of 12 are homeless, and young people aged 12 to 24 make up 23% of the entire homeless population.

Understanding the Scope of the Problem

Homelessness among young people is not just about lacking a roof over one's head; it's about a loss of stability, safety, and hope. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2021 report, children and youth represent a significant portion of the homeless population. Shockingly, 19% of those seeking help from specialist homelessness services last year were aged 15–24 years.

These numbers are more than just statistics—they represent real lives disrupted by circumstances often beyond their control. The Mission Australia Youth Survey in 2019 revealed that these experiences are often linked to traumatic events such as family and domestic violence (16%) or a housing crisis (19%).

Taite Gibson's experience

Taite Gibson is one of many youths who at just 16, is facing the challenge of homelessness.

Listen to Taite's interview below with Ellen Crepaz to understand the dire situation these teens are living in. It's not just about having to couch surf. The dangerous aspect of being homeless is having to sleep outside in the cold and feeling unsafe. Unsheltered homelessness can lead to hypothermia, which is when the body's temperature drops below 35°C. Thanks to YP Space Mid North Coast, Taite has found the help and support she needs. Her dream is to represent the women's NRL team one day and become a registered nurse and midwife. She is now studying at TAFE and hopes to pursue that path at a university in the future.

Local initiatives are a step in the right direction

In response to the growing need for social and affordable housing, local initiatives are taking shape to address the crisis. In Port Macquarie, a new development is set to provide much-needed relief. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, recently announced the construction of 94 new high-quality homes, including 28 social units and 66 affordable units, at the corner of Grant and Gordon Streets.

“With Homelessness Week coming to an end and understanding the need for more social and affordable housing in our local area, it is welcome news that plans for the Gordon Street site are commencing and community consultation is now underway,” Mrs. Williams stated.

This development is part of a broader effort to increase social housing in the area, following the opening of 16 new units in November 2021. The new project, which is currently undergoing community consultation, represents a significant step forward in addressing the housing needs of vulnerable populations, including homeless youth.

Homes NSW will be conducting a Community Drop-In Session at the Port Macquarie Library on Tuesday, 20th August from 5pm to gather feedback and advice from residents. This input will help shape the final design of the development, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community. Residents can also provide feedback via phone on 1800 738 718 or email communityengagement@homes.nsw.gov.au by Friday 30th August 2024.

How You Can Help

1. Support Local Homelessness Services

Donate to or volunteer with organisations such as YP Space MNC that provide shelter, food, and support services to homeless youth. These services are often the first line of defense in helping young people find stability.

"St Thomas Anglican Church has their Soup Kitchen on Wednesdays. Prior to the 3-course lunch you can collect groceries (bread, vegetables, easy-to-open canned goods) with a gold coin donation. We are grateful to businesses that donate food and other items." - Kathy Nichols

2. Advocate for Policy Change

Raise your voice to support policies that address the root causes of homelessness, such as affordable housing, mental health services, and protections against domestic violence. Advocacy can lead to the systemic changes needed to reduce homelessness in the long term.

3. Participate in Community Initiatives

Engage in local consultations and support housing projects like the one proposed in Port Macquarie. You can help shape solutions that directly impact your community.

4. Offer Employment Opportunities

If you’re a business owner, consider offering job opportunities or internships to homeless or at-risk youth. Employment can provide the stability and confidence they need to rebuild their lives.

Youth homelessness in Australia is a hidden crisis that demands our attention. All young people should be protected by the society and have the opportunity to thrive. Each of us has a role to play in ending youth homelessness and ensuring that every young person has a safe place to call home.
